Karan Johar Hints At Adar Poonawalla’s Possible Exit From Dharma Productions

Filmmaker Karan Johar recently stated that Adar Poonawalla could step away from Dharma, as it is purely a business deal. He clarified that the partnership is a business arrangement, and Adar may exit in the future. Scroll below and read to know why.

Karan Johar Hints At Exit Of Adar Poonawalla From Dharma Productions

Last year, Karan Johar sold a 50 percent stake in Dharma Productions to Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawalla, who reportedly invested Rs 1000 crore in Dharma Productions and Dharmatic Entertainment. The filmmaker has now revealed that Adar could step away in the future, as the partnership is purely a business arrangement.

In a candid chat with Sarthak Ahuja, Karan Johar said, “I think this was a move towards diversification, but with him (Adar), it’s a balance. I’m sure at some point, he is looking for an exit out of this deal because he is a businessman, and this is a business. But also, I think he is a lover of the arts.”

The filmmaker added, “But he is very clear. Maybe the return at that point, after 8 or 10 years or whenever he is looking at it, is not magnificently huge but enough to have satiated him, to have satiated his creativity or rather his diversification needs, as well as given him that kind of glory.”

Karan Johar Opens Up On His Bank Balance

While talking about Adar Poonawalla, Karan also subtly brought attention to his own bank balance. The filmmaker said, “You look at my bank balance. I am nothing compared to a gazillion business heads but there is a love that people have for the work we do, and that kind of glory cannot be monetised,” . He further added, “I may live a certain life and project a certain lifestyle, but please look at my accounts, and it will be ‘yeh toh naam bada hai darshan chote hai’.”

Karan further said, “I don’t associate names with power. I associate names with respect, and I always think that respect is bigger than love. Reputation and respect are so much bigger than love, and when you earn that, it is more than what any IP can give me.”

Last year, Karan Johar shared that Dharma Productions does not earn as much profit as many assume. He admitted that people are often surprised when they see his profit-and-loss statements and question whether filmmaking is financially worthwhile. However, Johar emphasized that making movies is driven by passion and emotion, not just business logic.
