SLB, Karan Johar

If there is one filmmaker who can make the simplest of scenes look visually grand and appealing, it is undoubtedly Sanjay Leela Bhansali. With the knack of painting beautiful stories on canvas, he brings to life some historical characters through his movies and narrates poignantly beautiful movies.

So, it won’t come as a surprise if his contemporaries are mighty jealous of the man. However, what comes as a surprise is an honest confession by one such filmmaker, who has been accused of nepotism by an A-list actress. Well yes, Karan Johar who has never minced his words, recently expressed that he is very much jealous of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

So, at ‘The Big Talk’ segment of MAMI Movie Mela, Karan Johar who was in a conversation with Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, was asked by Ranbir about his equation with SLB. He said, “I’m jealous because I think he is one of the most visually amazing filmmakers. I think he is on top of his game and the way he paints a visual, I think no other filmmaker can. So, I’m really envious of him.”

Further, Alia asked him further about the jealousy. To this he said, “I’m not sure… I have done Ph.D in jealousy, but whole feeling is that it again motivates me because I think if you don’t acknowledge the brilliance of others, you will never really get there yourself. So, I think it’s very imperative that you realise something is brilliant and I think Sanjay Leela Bhansali is brilliant, and therefore I aspire to be there.” (Also Read: Karan Johar dismisses false reports about ‘Shiddat’. Ranbir too spoke about competition by saying, “You see something on the screen and you feel bad. You feel, I wish I could do it. You feel bad but you feel inspired as well. Earlier on, I was competitive and jealous. Then you reach a point where it is about your own survival. About how good you are and treating yourself as your own competition and trying to be better. So, these things happen in different phases. Like now when I see Varun Dhawan in ‘Judwaa 2’, I am so happy for his success and that so early on he has created such a big audience for himself.”

It’s great to see them being so upfront and honest about these things.
