Kriti Sanon’s latest advertisement has the internet divided. For the unversed, the actress recently featured in a Raksha Bandhan advertisement for a well known jewellery brand. In it, the ‘Cocktail 2’ actress is seen looking stunning in an Indo-Western outfit comprising a bralette-style blouse paired with a draped skirt and cape.
Soon after the ad dropped, many objected to the actor’s ‘not-so-traditional’ attire as she ties a rakhi to her onscreen brother and dog. While several users found the outfit inappropriate for the occasion, others took a strong stand and condemned the actress being trolled. Kriti’s festive look has ignited an important conversation regarding the policing of women’s clothing. Scroll to read their reactions.
Kriti Sanon’s Outfit In Raksha Bandhan Ad Sparks Online Debate
Trolling the brand and to a certain extent the actress as well, an X user wrote, “Who wears just a bra for Raksha Bandhan? This is exactly why Bollywood seems increasingly disconnected from ground realities.” The same user added, “Kriti Sanon was cast as Mata Sita in Adipurush, yet for a brand promotion, the portrayal of a festival like Raksha Bandhan can be reduced to this?”
Another wrote, “A FIR be filed against @kritisanon for perverted portrayal of brother sister festival of rakhi & hurting the dharmik sentiments of hindus u/s 299 BNS— Deliberate & Malicious Acts to insult religious beliefs through visual or electronic means punishment up to 3 years in prison” A third added, “Bikinis are for beaches and resorts, think there are better clothes for festivals, sad if they think they can get away by titilating religious festivals of one community while being totally pious towards others…”
A fourth, tweeted, “What nonsense is this Inko Hindu festivals hi milte hain apna WOKE agenda chalane?” The same person added, “Here, Kriti Sanon is “celebrating” #RakshaBandhan wearing this skimpy outfit (perhaps left over from Cocktail 2). Kriti is not just a brand ambassador, but also a strategic investor so she would have a say in the concept & clothes. I challenge GIVA to make an E!D ad with such a skimpily dressed model. They won’t.”
Netizens Support Kriti, Condemn Policing Of Women’s Clothing
While many took to X to slam Kriti and the brand for what the actress is seen wearing in the ad, others spoke in support of both and even questioned the backlash. One user wrote, “Everyone trolling Kriti Sanon for this GIVA ad, saying she’s wearing a “bikini.” Is she? Nope. She’s not dressed inappropriately. Maybe her outfit just doesn’t fit your definition of “decency.” I could wear that in front of my brother too. Same people cheering her bikini scenes in movies are now policing her clothes. Women are judged either way. Get a life, trollers.”
Another added, “Nothing wrong with the ad. Judging her dress because it doesn’t fit some narrow definition of “decent” says more about misogyny than her outfit. I can dress like that around my brother too. Women don’t owe anyone “decency.” A third tweeted, “Funny how people suddenly become guardians of decency when it comes to womens clothes. If you dont like the outfit, scroll. No need to police someone else choices.”
A fourth commented, “(The ad) is pathbreaking because women across the country were feeling oppressed by societal expectations to dress traditionally or modestly for Raksha Bandhan, and they needed something that broke the stereotype. Finally, it is here. More power to Kriti Sanon.”
