Singer Kunal Ganjawala and actor Manish Raisinghan came up with a new song ‘ Nikle Toh Nikal Logey’ to entertain the audience amid the coronavirus lockdown. While the Hindi lyrics have been written by Geet Sagar, the English part was penned by Kunal Ganjawala. We recently had a virtual conversation with Kunal and Manish.

When we asked Kunal if the music industry exhibit problematic behaviour towards the newcomers (referring to Sonu Nigam’s video against T-Series), to which Kunal said, “I and a couple of people didn’t sign, then also it was a problem. but those who signed were put on the shelf. Anybody becoming popular is a problem for a record label. You sign up Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Shaan and then you don’t release their music, so you have legally bound them and then you don’t release their songs and tell ‘aab dekhta hoon tum kya karte hoh’, so it is just exhibiting power which is not fair. If you don’t listen to them, your music will not get released or you will not be allowed to sing in films. If you are signed up, a big part of your proceeds goes to them.”

Sonu Nigam in his video said that his songs had been dubbed many times. Has it ever happened with him too? Kunal agreed to it and said, “Yes, it has happened to me too. It happened with Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Super 30’. I sang a beautiful song by Ajay-Atul (music composers of the movie). Just before the movie got released I sang two songs, but they had told there was one particular song that Hrithik wanted to sing from the very beginning but it was a complex melody. Ajay-Atul told me that Hrithik may not be able to sing this melody, so we will make a simpler song for him because this is a complex song with complex intervals where he is teaching the children, a small song of 2 minutes. I sang it knowing that Hrithik may sing it. But then there was another song which they wanted me to sing. Then just before that one of the producers or director suddenly going against the wish of Ajay-Atul recorded the song in some other voice. Ye toh phir bhi pyaar se hua, lekin bohot baar aisa bhi hua hain where we were not being told. So, I have stopped singing and this is one of the reasons why I have stopped. Like Sonu says “Mujhe is swayamvar main part nahi lena hain”, I also don’t want to be part of that swayamvar.”

Let’s wait and watch whether Bhushan Kumar or Divya Khosla Kumar has something to say about this rant from Kunal Ganjawala.
