Madhuri Dixit Dola Re Dola Devdas

More than two decades after Devdas created cinematic history, one of its most iconic songs, Dola Re Dola, has found itself at the centre of a fresh conversation. Earlier this week, Rubina Khan, a longtime associate of late choreographer Saroj Khan, claimed that Madhuri Dixit was four months pregnant while filming the celebrated dance number. Now, the actress has addressed the claim and firmly denied it. Scroll on to say what she had to share.

Madhuri Dixit Clarifies She Wasn’t Pregnant During The Shoot Of Devdas’ Dola Re Dola

Speaking to SCREEN, Madhuri Dixit clarified that she was not expecting during the shoot of Dola Re Dola. Refuting the recent speculation, the actress said, “Arin is born in 2003. So, you do the math.”

Madhuri’s elder son, Arin Nene, was born on March 17, 2003. Meanwhile, Devdas premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23, 2002, before its theatrical release on July 12, 2002. The timeline, as Madhuri pointed out, does not support the claim that she was four months pregnant during the filming of the song.

The actress, however, acknowledged that the shoot was physically demanding and that she was not feeling her best at the time. “I was under the weather because I was travelling a lot. I was going back and forth, shooting here and going back. And all my shoots were night shoots. So, for me, it was very grueling. I was a little under the weather, but nothing like that,” she added.

What Did Rubina Khan Say?

The clarification comes days after Rubina Khan shared behind-the-scenes details about the making of the song during an interview with Bollywood Thikana. Recalling the scale of the production, Rubina said, “It took 17 days to shoot that song. Rehearsals happened for at least a month. We rehearsed separately, and the lead actors rehearsed separately.”

She further claimed that Madhuri faced difficulties while performing one of the dance movements because she was pregnant at the time. “There’s a step in which Madhuri ma’am turns and sits down. That shot kept happening from 9 am to 10 pm because she was four months pregnant. So, she couldn’t turn properly and was feeling dizzy,” Rubina said.

Rubina also recalled that the actress was unwell during the shoot but continued filming without requesting any modifications to the choreography. “She also had fever at that time. She struggled a lot,” she added.

Dola Re Dola remains one of the most celebrated songs in Bollywood history. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the sequence brought together Madhuri Dixit’s Chandramukhi and Aishwarya Rai’s Paro in a grand dance face-off. Interestingly, the two characters never share a scene in Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s original novel. Bhansali took creative liberty by staging the memorable sequence, which later became one of the defining moments of Devdas.

The song featured music by Ismail Darbar, lyrics by Nusrat Badr, and vocals by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Shreya Ghoshal and KK. Over the years, it has continued to be regarded as one of Bollywood’s most iconic dance numbers.

On the work front, Madhuri Dixit has a busy slate ahead. Her major upcoming project is the dark comedy-drama film Maa Behen, which is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Netflix India on June 4, 2026. She is also set to explore the crime-thriller genre with the series Mrs Deshpande, marking another intriguing addition to her evolving body of work.
