Veteran music composer Mohammed Zahur Khayyam left for the heavenly abode today at 9:30 pm. Reportedly, he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sujay Hospital in Mumbai. He was in a critical condition as he had an infection in the lungs, and it was informed by BN Tiwari, president of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees Union. Javed Akhtar, Sonu Nigam and Uttam Singh and others reached the hospital.

News agency ANI took to their Twitter handle to share the news of his death. The tweet read as: “Veteran music composer, Mohammed Zahur ‘Khayyam’ Hashmi, passed away at a hospital in Mumbai.”

The music composer was better known for composing music for films like ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ and ‘Umrao Jaan’. He won three Filmfare Awards for Best Music in 1977 for ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ and ‘Umrao Jaan’ in 1982. He also got a  lifetime achievement award in 2010. In 2007, he was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Creative Music, by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. He was also awarded the third-highest civilian honor, Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2011.

The legendary composer also gave music to movies like ‘Trishul’, ‘Thodi Si Bewafaai’, ‘Bazaar’ and ‘Noorie’ among others.
