Naseeruddin Shah says mainstream cinema has RUINED the taste of audience forever: It keeps making the same kind of films

Naseeruddin Shah is one of the most veteran and versatile actors in the entertainment industry. Be it cult classics or drama, Naseeruddin Shah has delivered some of the most memorable roles in his film career. Though, whenever the actor speaks about something or opines about something, the world keeps its ears open to pay attention.

The actor has sat on the director’s chair for the second time with his recently released short film titled Man Woman, Man Woman. Though the actor has a shiny career in the entertainment industry, he feels that India’s mainstream cinema has not fully adhered to its responsibilities as a medium.

Naseeruddin Shah’s opinion on mainstream cinema

Speaking with IANS, Naseeruddin Shah says, “Our mainstream cinema has ruined the taste of the audience forever. Filmmaker Satyajit Ray mentioned about this thing in his book titled ‘Our films, their films’ which he wrote 50 years ago. He wasn’t running down Indian films but he was merely comparing the Indian filmmakers with international filmmakers.”

He also added that it was said by Satyajit Ray that we need an angry as well as curious audience. Further, he said, “It’s been over 100 years for our cinema, and our mainstream cinema keeps making the same kind of films, many stories that you find in the mainstream films can be found in the Indian epics like Mahabharata which is one of the greatest epics written. Every mainstream film that you see in India has some or the other references from the Mahabharata’. Either that or Shakespeare. Every cliche in Hindi mainstream cinemas has been heavily borrowed from Shakespeare.”

Naseeruddin Shah marked his directorial debut with the film Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota. Now, after 17 years, the actor has donned the director’s hat for Man Woman, Man Woman. The short film can be watched on YouTube. It features his wife, Ratna Pathak Shah, along with his son, Vivaan Shah.
