Taking to social media, Nupur defended her sister and questioned the criticism surrounding the advertisement. She wrote, “Imagine being this bothered by what another woman chooses to wear. Respectfully, evolve.” She also highlighted her personal connection to the campaign, adding, “PS: I’m the one she tied the rakhi to, and if I don’t have a problem with it, why do you?”

What Sparked The Controversy Around Kriti Sanon’s Rakshabandhan Ad?

The controversy began after Kriti appeared in an ivory lehenga featuring a deep-neck blouse and a cape-style drape for the Rakshabandhan campaign. While several viewers appreciated the styling, others criticised the outfit as inappropriate for the occasion, citing traditional and cultural expectations.

Kriti Sanon Hits Back At Trolls

Addressing the criticism on Instagram, Kriti questioned the tendency to judge a woman’s cultural values based on her clothing. “The essence of festivals is not in the clothes you wear; it is in the emotions and meaning you hold for the traditions,” she wrote.

She went on to describe her bond with Nupur, explaining that the Rakhi tradition between them is rooted in mutual protection and care, extending even to their pets. “After all, they are family!” she added. Kriti then questioned the broader criticism, asking, “Also, when will we stop telling women what to wear?? Ethnic fashion has evolved over the years, but still a woman’s respect for her culture is measured by just her clothes!! Culture & Traditions are in her heart, not in her neckline!”

Kangana Ranaut Also Reacts To Kriti Sanon’s Advertisement

The backlash was earlier amplified by actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, who shared her reaction on Instagram Stories. She pointed to the variety of clothing available to women today while questioning Kriti’s choice of outfit for the advertisement. “It’s a wonderful time to be a woman. Our closets are full of variety of clothes, today’s woman is a global woman. From cocktail dresses to lehenga cholis, jeans to saris, bikinis to salwar kameez, from all the options that are available to us today why would you tie your brother a rakhi in your bikini/undergarments? Where are all your styling options? Ha ha the advert looks intentionally creepy!” she wrote.

On the professional front, Kriti Sanon was last seen in Cocktail 2, co-starring Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna. Directed by Homi Adajania, the film is currently streaming on Netflix.
