Priyanka Chopra ADMITS Joining Hollywood At 30 Blew Up Her Bollywood Career

Priyanka Chopra is set to make her return to Indian cinema after nearly a decade with SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi, following her extensive work in Hollywood during that period. While she is now one of the few Indian stars with a significant international presence, her journey was far from easy. Priyanka chose to step away from her successful career in India at her peak, a decision she recently discussed in a new interview, highlighting the initial challenges she faced in the West.

Priyanka Chopra Recalls Her Hollywood Debut At 30 ‘Terrifying’

In an interview with Variety, Priyanka reflected on her debut in the West, “To restart your career in your 30s is terrifying. I was secure.” She added, I was doing well financially. I was established. And I chose to blow it up. It took many years to be sitting where I am right now, a lot of pavement-pounding,” she shared. She moved to the US around 2015, shortly after the success of films like Mary Kom, Bajirao Mastani, and Dil Dhadakne Do, when she was among the highest-paid Indian actresses.

She added, “I am in a position now where I get to pick the things that I want to make. I understand the privilege of that very much, and I take it very seriously. Discipline was a really big part of our growing up. Your word is your bond. If you say something, you have to stand for it.”

Priyanka spoke about the stereotypes she encountered as she entered Hollywood. “People would comment, ‘Oh, you speak English well,’ as if it was unexpected. There was a preconceived notion about me every time I walked into a meeting,” she recalled. However, she was determined not to be typecast or limited by these perceptions. Instead, she aimed to be part of ‘borderless entertainment,’ working with actors from different countries and crossing cultural boundaries.

Priyanka Chopra’s Hollywood Journey

Priyanka made her Hollywood debut as the lead in the TV series Quantico. Later, she took supporting roles in major films like Baywatch and The Matrix Resurrections. Over time, she has led prominent Hollywood projects such as Citadel, Heads of State, and her upcoming pirate adventure film The Bluff with Karl Urban. She is also preparing for her Indian cinema comeback in 2027 with SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi.

Varanasi–Priyanka’s Return To Indian Cinema

Marking her return after nearly 8 years, Varanasi is Priyanka’s first Hindi film since The Sky Is Pink, which released before the pandemic. The pan-India film stars Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran alongside Priyanka. Described as a time-traveling adventure rooted in Indian history, the movie is scheduled to hit theatres in April 2027.
