A day before its planned theatre release, the makers of Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, announced that the film would now premiere directly on OTT instead. Maddock Films, the production house, shared that due to national security concerns following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, they decided to skip cinemas. The film was set to release on Prime Video on May 16.
Maddock Films Land In Legal Trouble, Court Blocks OTT Release
However, this last-minute decision led to legal trouble. PVR Inox, India’s biggest cinema chain, filed a Rs 60 crore lawsuit against Maddock Films. They claimed breach of contract and financial loss. According to reports, PVR Inox accused Maddock of using the terror attack as an excuse to avoid a theatrical release, pointing instead to poor advance ticket sales as the actual reason.
The Bombay High Court stepped in and passed an interim order. The court said the film cannot be released anywhere, including OTT platforms, until the usual 8-week theatrical window has passed. This rule is in place to protect cinemas’ revenue when a movie is released in theatres.
PVR Inox argued that they had signed an agreement on May 6, and Maddock backed out just two days later, causing huge losses after marketing the film in over 30 theatres. Maddock defended its decision, saying the rule only applies if a movie is actually released in cinemas, which Bhool Chuk Maaf wasn’t.
The court disagreed, stating that such last-minute pullouts hurt business partnerships and financial trust. Earlier, Maddock and Amazon MGM Studios released a joint statement saying national safety was their priority and they had chosen to release the film at home for everyone’s safety.
For now, the film’s release is on hold, and a final decision will be taken in court on June 16.
