Ram Gopal Varma Reveals Bhoot’s Filming Location Has Stayed Vacant Even After 20 Years

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently attended a special screening of his horror film Bhoot at the Red Lorry Film Festival in Mumbai. During the event, the director looked back on the making of the 2002 film, starring Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar in lead roles. While interacting with the audience, Varma shared several behind-the-scenes anecdotes and interesting trivia about the film. He reflected on the strong impact it had on viewers and the horror genre in Bollywood. He also revealed a surprising detail related to the film’s legacy — the apartment in Mumbai where Bhoot was shot has reportedly remained vacant even after more than two decades, highlighting the lasting impression the film left on people.

Ram Gopal Varma shared that once it was decided the story of Bhoot would be set in Mumbai, he chose to film it inside an apartment rather than a bungalow. According to Varma, the setting felt more relatable for audiences, as a majority of city residents live in apartment buildings. The filmmaker further revealed that the apartment used for the shoot has reportedly remained unoccupied even today.

Ram Gopal Varma Reveals He Completed The Film In 30 Days

He further revealed that the film was completed in just 30 days, with most of the shooting taking place within the same apartment. He said that many people are hesitant to move in after its association with the film. Ram Gopal Varma shared, “I completed the film in just 30 days since most of it was shot in a single apartment. Here’s an interesting detail—the film was released in 2002, and even after more than 20 years, that flat is still vacant. It became quite famous following the film’s release, and no one seems willing to live there. It is located in the Lokhandwala Complex, though I don’t recall the name of the building.”

Ram Gopal Varma also spoke about casting Urmila Matondkar in Bhoot. The filmmaker revealed that a particular moment from his earlier film Rangeela influenced his decision. He credited one of her expressions in the song Hai Rama for convincing him that she was the right choice for the role. Varma explained, “I decided to cast Urmila because of a specific expression she gave in another film of mine. A moment in the ‘Hai Rama’ song from Rangeela stayed with me. She is wearing a red dress and looking intensely at Jackie Shroff. That close-up made me believe she could convincingly portray the character in Bhoot.”
