Ranveer Singh and Zoya Akhtar

We earlier reported to you that filmmaker Zoya Akhtar’s next flick ‘Gully Boy’ (working title) would be based on street rappers. According to the latest updates, none other than actor Ranveer Singh will be donning a street rapper’s character in the film; one who starts his journey from the slums and reaches the heights!

“The film is inspired by real life rappers like Divine and Naezy whose work has ranged from speaking about petty crimes in their respective Mumbai neighbourhoods of Kurla and Andheri to sharing stories about finding a voice and becoming activists. It is an extremely ambitious project and will roll next year,” TOI quoted a source.

Ranveer’s character will rap about issues like social and economic inequality, life on the streets, corruption among politicians and homosexuality.

Zoya, along with screenplay writer Reema Kagti (who is also a part of this project), has been mixing up with rappers and understanding the elements and inspirations of their creations, as part of their research. A few real life rappers who are being sources of reference for the film are Kolkata-based Vik Sen, Bangalore based Vignesh Shivananda, Tripura based BK and more.

We also hear another parallel male lead will be present in the film.

Doesn’t it all sound very interesting?
