nepotism in bollywood

A year back, on the famous couch of ‘Koffee With Karan’ sat two stars. While one was the son of a famous actress, the other one had forayed into Bollywood sans any connections. The two couldn’t be more different. We are talking about Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan, who had come to Karan Johar’s ‘Koffee With Karan 5’ during the promotions of their film ‘Rangoon’, And that’s when the inevitable happened. Kangana called Karan the ‘flag-bearer’ of nepotism, and though Karan blew the matter away, none knew that it would blow so much out of proportion that the debate would refuse to end, even a year later.

After a bevy of stars having spoken about the infamous n-word, now finally, Salman Khan has broken his silence over the same. (Also Read: Salman Khan chants ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ at IFFI 2017)

At the HT Summit, Salman joked on the same. He said, “Ab jaake nepotism ka matlab pata chala jab Kangana ne nepotism ke baare mein baat ki hai.”  (Now when Kangana has spoken about the word, I have come to know the meaning of ‘nepotism’.

When he was further quizzed on Being Talent, a franchise of his, and whether it believes in launching fresh talent, he further said, “Jo successful aadmi hota hai woh talent management company ko kaam deta hai. (Whoever is successful gives work to the management company). A manager cannot get, a successful person work. But, a management company can get work, by being persistent, for those people who are not doing well for themselves. But it only depends on how focused, how hard working, that management company is. So most of them want to sign big stars, which is a damn good thing. But then they need to concentrate on people who have potential. If they see a bad one, for whatever reason, for example if two movies of the person did not work and you feel that how can you invest so much of money. Well, you have ignored his talent. So, this is what I want to do. If the person has talent, we will give him that film. I have worked with so many newcomers, so many people who did well at one point of time, and after that their careers just diminished. No one wants to risk it because cost of production becomes so high. Film industry mein koi unch neech ka bhaav nahi. (film industry does not discriminate)”

Salman himself comes from a star background. His father Salim Khan has been a veteran scriptwriter who has given movies like ‘Sholay’, Mr. India (both with Javed Akhtar), ‘Naam’ (standalone), and many more.

Well, we do think that what he said makes sense. What do you think?

On work front, Salman will be seen in ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’, opposite Katrina Kaif. The movie is a sequel of 2012 superhit ‘Ek Tha Tiger’.
