Diljit Dosanjh Starrer Satluj Screening Begins In Punjab

The community views the ban as an unjust suppression of their right to access historical truths, especially given the film’s focus on the Punjab insurgency period and the victims of violence. Many community members and leaders emphasise the importance of young generations understanding this history. A video has surfaced from Bathinda in Punjab where villagers have assembled to watch the film starring Diljit Dosanjh.

Senior Congress leader Taranjeet Singh Tony expressed that the government should have made the film tax-free. It should be similar to The Kashmir Files, arguing that the youth have a right to know what happened during Punjab’s turbulent period and who was responsible. He criticised the government for depriving minorities of their rights. He emphasised the importance of truth and vigilance for future generations.

Local youth and community members also voiced their support for screening the film. It highlights that Satluj tells the story of Jaswant Singh Khalra. But many others like him suffered similar fates, victims of police excesses, targeted killings, and disappearances. Harbaksh Singh, a resident of Guru Nanak Nagar, pointed out that many innocent people from various communities were victims, and the film sheds light on these issues.

Overall, the community’s efforts reflect a desire to preserve and share their history, seek justice, and ensure that the younger generation understands the sacrifices and struggles of their community during Punjab’s insurgency era.

About The Film

Directed by Honey Trehan, Satluj is inspired by the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra. He was a bank clerk who became one of Punjab’s most prominent human rights activists. He began investigating the alleged illegal cremation of around 25,000 unidentified bodies between 1984 and 1994. The film follows Khalra’s efforts to uncover the truth before his abduction from his Amritsar home on September 6, 1995. In 2005, four Punjab Police personnel were convicted of his abduction and murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
