Rajpal Yadav To Go Back To Jail In Cheque Bounce Case

In a significant legal setback for Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, the Delhi High Court has upheld his conviction in a cheque bounce case, ordering his return to jail. The court described Yadav’s conduct as ‘dubious’ and emphasised the need for him to serve his sentence.

The controversy stems from a financial dispute dating back to 2010 when Rajpal Yadav borrowed Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. Unfortunately, the film failed at the box office, and Yadav was unable to repay the loan, leading to legal proceedings that have spanned over a decade. Scroll down to read what happened.

Rajpal Yadav To Go Back To Jail In Cheque Bounce Case

The legal troubles of Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav have intensified as the Delhi High Court has upheld his conviction in a cheque bounce case and imposed a significant fine. On Friday, the court delivered a stern verdict, emphasising the seriousness of the matter. The Delhi High Court confirmed Yadav’s conviction related to seven cheque bounce cases, describing his conduct as “dubious” and showing no leniency.

The court ordered that Yadav be sent back to jail, with the sentences to run concurrently. It has directed him to pay a fine of Rs 1.05 crore in each of the seven cases. Additionally, his wife, Radha Rajpal Yadav, was ordered to pay over Rs 5 lakh in fines for each case.

The court observed that Yadav had given multiple undertakings promising to settle the dues but failed to honour these commitments. This came despite being granted numerous opportunities. The court, however, decided to keep the operation of its verdict on hold for two months. This allows Yadav the chance to approach a higher court in appeal.

In April 2018, a magistrate’s court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife, Radha, for cheque bounce. It sentenced him to six months in jail. This verdict was upheld by the sessions court in early 2019. Yadav subsequently appealed to the Delhi High Court, which, in June 2024, temporarily suspended his sentence on the condition that he take “sincere and genuine measures” to clear the nearly Rs 9 crore dues. However, on February 2, 2024, the court ordered his surrender after noting his repeated failure to fulfil his repayment commitments.

Bollywood Support

Despite his legal troubles, many industry colleagues came forward to support Rajpal Yadav during this difficult period. Actors like Sonu Sood, Ajay Devgn, and Salman Khan publicly appealed for help and contributed financially to assist him. Several singers and filmmakers also extended support by offering advance payments and casting him in upcoming projects.

Yadav was granted bail on February 16, 2024, allowing him to await further legal proceedings outside jail. This case underscores the financial and legal challenges faced by actors in the industry. It highlights the importance of financial accountability and support networks within Bollywood.
