Sonali Kulkarni is one of the finest actresses we have in Bollywood. Though her contribution to the Marathi cinema is tremendous, we have seen her play only selective roles in Bollywood. She was recently seen in Ali Abbas Zafar directorial ‘Bharat’. In the film, Kulkarni played Salman Khan’s mother’s role.

In real life, Sonali is nine years younger than Salman. So naturally, her casting as Salman’s mother in ‘Bharat‘ raised a few eyebrows. However, the actress has a valid reason behind agreeing to play mother to an actor who is older than her. When she was offered ‘Bharat’, the age factor did cross her mind as well. However, it was Ali Abbas Zafar who reasoned out with her and put all the doubts to rest.

Sharing her apprehensions about taking up the role, Kulkarni told News 18, “When I was offered ‘Bharat’, I was quite unsure that whether or not I’d be able to pull off this character gracefully. But all my queries were put at rest when I got to meet my director Ali Abbas Zafar. Ali was very sure about it because the mother was to be seen with younger as well as older version of Bharat (played by Salman). So he needed one person who could carry it off till the end with both the versions of ‘Bharat’.”

She further added, “Of course, I thought of my age. It did cross my mind, but I have been playing variety of characters since the beginning of my career.”

The actress went on to share that she has even played Hrithik Roshan’s mother in ‘Mission Kashmir’ and Saif Ali Khan’s love interest in ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, and each time she was accepted by the audience and the critics alike. Hence she doesn’t have any qualms in taking up such roles as far as she is enjoying playing them.
