Actor, doctor and transgender activist Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju has criticised Orry’s remarks on gender-neutral bathrooms during his conversation with content creator Kavya Karnatac on her podcast, calling the discussion divisive and transphobic. Reacting to clips from the episode that circulated online, she said such conversations should not platform people who are neither subject experts nor have lived experience of the issue. Trinetra criticised Orry’s remarks on gender-neutral bathrooms in Kavya Karnatac’s podcast and accused the discussion of fear-mongering.
Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju CRITICISES Orry’s Remark On Gender Neutral Bathrooms
The Made in Heaven actor’s response came after a clip from Karnatac’s podcast, Learn By KK Create, went viral on social media. In the discussion, Orhan Awatramani, popularly known as Orry, questioned the idea of gender-neutral bathrooms and raised concerns about women sharing such spaces with men. The exchange later drew strong reactions online, including support for Orry from several users and also added to a wider debate around women’s safety, transgender access and how gender-neutral spaces are discussed online.
Reacting to the clip, Trinetra shared a video on Instagram and accused the podcast of spreading misinformation about what transgender people are actually demanding. “I just want to say one thing to every podcast host. Please stop bringing guests onto your show if they are not a subject matter expert and if they have no lived experience on the topic,” she said.
Trinetra Opens Up On Her Experience
Speaking from her own experience as a transgender woman, Trinetra recalled the challenges she faced while studying medicine. “I am a transgender woman who, at one point, could not use the male or the female restroom because both had become very unsafe. I developed UTIs because I would not drink water in medical school as an MBBS student,” she said.
She argued that the debate had overlooked the realities faced by transgender people and reduced a complex issue to fear-based rhetoric. “No one is asking for only gender-neutral restrooms. What people are asking for is a safe place to go to the restroom other than male and female restrooms. People want all three, not just one,” she said.
In the caption accompanying her video, Trinetra directly called out Karnatac, writing, “So, so irresponsible of you. Please do better. This seriously brings your credibility into question.” She further clarified that transgender activists are not asking women and children to share washrooms with men. “No one’s asking your daughters to share restrooms with men. The ask is simple — that everyone have access to use a safe restroom. If that means male, female and a third neutral restroom for everyone’s safety, so be it,” she wrote.
Trinetra also accused the podcast of prioritising engagement over facts and criticised the decision to platform views she described as “divisive and transphobic” without offering any counterarguments.
What sparked the controversy? The debate began after Orry’s comments on gender-neutral spaces went viral.
Online REACTIONS
Several users praised his stance, arguing that he had raised valid concerns about safety and privacy. Others, however, said the discussion oversimplified a complex issue and failed to reflect the actual demands of transgender and non-binary communities. The controversy has once again brought discussions around transgender rights, public facilities and representation in digital media into the spotlight, with social media continuing to debate where personal comfort, safety and inclusivity intersect.
Neither Orry nor Kavya Karnatac has publicly responded to Trinetra’s remarks so far.
