Born to Nanabhai Bhatt and Shirin Mohammad Ali, Mahesh Bhatt developed interest in filmmaking at an early age. While in school, he started making product advertisements and eventually started working as an assistant director with celebrated filmmaker Raj Khosla. He made his directorial debut with Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain in 1974 and went on to direct critically acclaimed films like Naya Daur (1978), Arth (1982) and Saaransh (1984). Naam, released in 1986, was his first out and out commercial film. The filmmaker later directed commercially successful films like Aashiqui (1990) and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991). For years now, Mahesh has been producing films under his banner Vishesh Films, which he co-owns with his brother Mukesh Bhatt. He was married to Kiran Bhatt and has two children with her – Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt. The director later tied the knot with actress Soni Razdan. The couple is parents to Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt.
