IGL Controversy: Big Relief For Samay Raina After SC Quashes All FIRs Against Comedians- Deets Inside

The Supreme Court has quashed the criminal proceedings against comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina, along with four other comedians, over their remarks concerning persons with disabilities in India’s Got Latent (IGL) controversy. The order was issued on August 14 by a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, bringing a close to a legal saga that had spanned over a year. SC Quashes All FIRs Against All Comedians Involved In IGL Controversy

The relief applies to Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar. The court acknowledged their efforts in organising events aimed at benefiting persons with disabilities and noted that the criminal cases against them would no longer proceed. The bench remarked, “Once there are genuine efforts, positive results are bound to follow. They are very bright youngsters. If they have started working in a positive direction, there will be positive output.” The court also indicated that all related proceedings would be set aside, though it left the larger issue of regulating online content open for future consideration, with plans to seek suggestions from persons with disabilities before framing any new directions.

About India’s Got Latent Controversy

The controversy erupted after multiple complaints and FIRs were filed across various states. They accused the comedians of obscenity and indecent language. Notably, YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia had also approached the Supreme Court for relief from coercive actions in his case. The court had earlier granted him interim protection from arrest. His separate plea remains pending.

During proceedings, the Supreme Court criticised Allahbadia’s remarks and emphasised the need to balance freedom of expression with social responsibility. The court also issued a warning to Samay Raina in March 2025 after he made remarks about the case during his Canada show. They said, “These youngsters may think that we are outdated, but we know how to deal with them. Don’t take the court lightly,” after Raina joked about paying his lawyer’s fees.

Progress & Efforts Made By The Respondents

In July 2026, the court took note of the respondents’ efforts. It included organising a chess tournament for persons with disabilities in Pune in March and planning additional fundraising events. They expressed their willingness to collaborate with NGOs and support individuals with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The court recognised these actions as compliance with earlier directions and appreciated the constructive steps.
