Gulshan Grover is an Indian actor and film producer who has appeared in over 100 films. He is popularly known as the “Bad Man” of Hindi cinema because of his ability to create an impact with his negative roles in films. While promoting his upcoming film, Heer Express, speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Gulshan Grover recalled meeting Rani Mukerji during the IIFA Awards. He also spoke about working with newcomers like Bipasha Basu, Kangana Ranaut and others.
Gulshan Grover On Working With Newcomers
When asked about what new changes he has observed in newcomers in Bollywood, Gulshan Grover said, “The change is right in front of you in the form of these two people. Normally, you get the opportunity to work with a lot of newcomers. We were also newcomers. In fact, I still believe, and maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, that even today, I feel like a newcomer. But for the first 15–20 films, I was definitely a newcomer. I did my first film with Rani Mukerji, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat. My first film with Katrina Kaif was Boom, with Bipasha Basu it was Jism, and with Kangana it was Gangster, a film by Anurag Basu and Mahesh Bhatt saab. With Sonali Bendre, too, I did her first film under Bhatt saab’s banner. So I’ve had the chance to work on the first films of many heroines. Luckily, their work was so beautiful that they all became stars, made a name for themselves. Everyone I just named, each one is better than the other. Truly beautiful, I can’t even explain.”
Gulshan Grover On Meeting Rani Mukerji
The actor said, “Recently, after an IIFA function, backstage, Shah Rukh called out to say, ‘Food’s in my room,’ and I said, ‘Sure, I’ll be there.’ So when I reached Shah Rukh’s room, there were 5 to 7 people, Karan Johar and others, and suddenly from behind, I heard someone say, ‘Daarji.’ I turned around, and it was Rani Mukerji. In that film, my character was called Daarji—I played her foster father, an emotional role. We met and spoke after a long time. I run into other actresses here and there, too, and those first-film memories remain in their minds as well as yours.”
Continuing he said, “Similarly, working on this first film with Divita, like you asked, what change did I see? I saw change in the form of these young actors: the confidence they have, the polish they carry, and their sense of understanding. They understand that no one, not other actors, not the unit, has the time to keep repeating things. There’s no time to make mistakes and try again and again. People have lost patience, and now everything is measured in terms of money. Today’s generation is so ready, so prepared. They understand the value of time, the patience of their co-actors, and the importance of getting everything just right. Both these actors have beautifully enhanced that point, how today’s younger generation is far, far more prepared than we were. I would say they are far more talented than I was in my first 50 films.”
