EXCLUSIVE: Dolly Singh Recalls Parents’ Perspective Changing After She Started Earning Money; Admits, “I Wasn’t Allowed To Wear Sleeveless”

Dolly Singh Recalls Parents’ Perspective Changing After She Started Earning Money

When asked whether she has seen the perception of people around her change after getting successful, Dolly said, “I have, I also feel like I love it like, you know, like relatives and all. Like bachpan mein when you meet them, they will, you know, power-play hota hai. Voh aapko kuch bol denge, aap sun ke chup ho jaoge, aap respect karoge, aap, you know, aap zyada kuch keh nahin paoge. Aap chhote ho waise bhi, to waise bhi chhote chhoton ko bolna nahin chahiye and all”.

Speaking about not being married yet, Dolly reacted, “Ab jab main voh rooms mein jaati hoon na, toh thoda mujhe bhi dar rehta hai. Jaise specially main shaadiyon mein jab jaati hoon, toh mere saare chhote cousins ki shaadi ho gayi. Main hi ek sore thumb ki tarah hoon. But I actually enjoy that power trip — ki haan, maine nahin ki hai shaadi. Haan, aapko koi mujhe poochta hai, “aap shaadi kab kar rahe ho?” I’m like, “aapko daawat chahiye na? Main deti hoon daawat. Kya karogi shaadi se? Kya karna hai aapko? Party chahiye na?” Like so, I enjoy that part so much now because I’m like — ab tum mera ukhaad nahin sakte kuch, kya kar loge? I’m financially independent. And I think for a woman, that is the biggest power.”

She further added, “So now I’m like bhai jo bolna hai bolo. Ab to body-shaming pe bhi hota hai. Haan, kai baar abhi bhi mujhe effect ho jaata hai. But aajkal toh main aise mazaak mein bolti hoon. Jaise koi mujhe bolega, “Arre beta tu bahut patli ho gayi hai, kuch kha liya kar.” And I’m like, “Par dadi aapke jaisi ban ke abhi main kya karoongi main? Aap khush ho kya?” You know. So like now I have started to reply a bit like that. I’ve started enjoying this power and this being in this room.”

Dolly On Her Parents’ Perspective Change

Agreeing that the perspective around her has changed, Dolly said, “And yes, these perspectives have changed, their way of talking to me has changed. Even my parents, yaar. Yaar, main toh bolti hoon mazaak mein ki parents ke opinion ko maine khareed liya hai. You know, the moment you start making money, everything changes. I mean voh bhi evolve hue hain kaafi. But they also used to come from a school of thought ki “aise mat karo, ye mat karo, voh mat pehno, ye mat karo.”

She further added, “I never used to be allowed to wear sleeveless. Salwar kameez pehno sirf, ye-voh. And abhi, I was shooting in Nainital for my show, and my parents had come on set, and I was wearing this like, shots. And someone told me, ‘Your parents are here, here,’ and I was like, ‘Oh shit! Maine chaddi pehni hui hai!’ Mera internal trauma jag gaya. But then I went there and I was literally pulling my chaddiyaan like, ‘Hello, hello’, sabse mil rahi hoon. And Papa is like, ‘Smart lag rahi hai.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, like the evolution is crazy.’ But it is, it is nice. It does feel like it, it is very intoxicating, also very powerful.”

Dolly Singh gained popularity after starring in Thank You For Coming and Double XL.
