ali fazal, guddu bhaiya, mirzapur,

Ali Fazal is an actor who works primarily in Hindi films and TV series. He made his screen debut with a small role in the film The Other End of the Line (2008) before appearing in the TV miniseries Bollywood Hero (2009). He had his first Hindi film release with a supporting role in 3 Idiots (2009), and went on to star in Always Kabhi Kabhi (2011), Baat Ban Gayi (2013), and Bobby Jasoos (2014). Greater success came for his roles in the comedies Fukrey (2013), Happy Bhag Jayegi (2016), and Fukrey Returns (2017). In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Ali Fazal opened up on Guddu Bhaiya from Mirzapur’s global recognition and how his nervousness shaped the character’s posture.

Ali Fazal On Playing Guddu Bhaiya In Mirazpur

When asked if portraying Guddu Bhaiya in the Mirzapur series was a difficult transformation, Ali Fazal said, “Yeah, that was… that was a lot. That was a very different kind of transformation. It was very different from who I am, from what we’ve grown up seeing. So, I did some study, tried to understand the people and their environment. Our writer, Puneet Krishna, is, of course, a director-writer himself, but he had fully created that world. I took a lot from him. You know, I used to take notes. Like the pronunciation marks, intonations, and those little linguistic nuances. They are very important, because every region has its way of speaking.”

Speaking of how his character Guddu Bhaiya gained more global recognition, the actor said, “It feels… it feels nice, I mean—you know—that you’ve reached people. And even in India, we had a bit of a hint that everyone had seen it. Everyone who owns a mobile phone has watched it. Even if not on TV, still. But when I went to New York, 90% of the time I stepped out, I was recognised—either for Victoria or for this. People only had two things to talk about. And you also realise how massive our NRI audience is, how strongly it functions globally.”

Ali Fazal On Using Gaalis While Filming Mirzapur

When asked if abusing or using gaalis was easy for him, Ali reacted, “Listen, to be honest, more than me, the other character actors were the ones who were using gaalis. In fact, in season 2, I didn’t use a single gaali. But I just didn’t need to—season 1 had enough of that. People didn’t even realise.” Speaking of, if using gaali is easy because a lot of actors take time, Fazal said, “Nahi aajati hai (laughs) abh mahaul hi aisa hai. Itna kehna kaafi hai.”

When asked which is one moment he will never forget from the Mirzapur set, Ali said, “There’s one moment I’ll never forget, which was the walk, my first day of shoot. It was a classroom shot, my very first day, and we were shooting at Gajomal College. I was extremely nervous that day because, despite all the preparation I had done. When you work on yourself alone, you don’t see the result, you don’t understand where you stand. I was feeling a lot of insecurity, thinking maybe I wasn’t ready for the part, that my body wasn’t in shape, that things weren’t quite there. And in that insecurity, just to try and look more intimidating. I subconsciously changed something… and that’s how the walk was born. That posture, that vibe, it all came from that one moment.”
