Singer Shruti is fast becoming one of the most dynamic voices in Indian music. After lending her voice to Citadel: Honey Bunny title track, she is all set to venture into mainstream Bollywood. Shruti has lent her voice to one of the melodies from Akshay Kumar starrer Housefull 5 titled Qayamat. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, she talks about the opportunity, Samantha and sexism in music industry. Excerpts:
You are stepping into mainstream cinema with a film like Housefull 5, which has a star-studded cast. How was the experience?
It was a dream come true. Housefull 5 has been India’s biggest franchise. And to be a part of something so big and huge and something so massive and to have your voice over such big stars, I think that’s a milestone.
When it comes to Citadel, a lot of chatter went on about Samantha being a part of the project despite her health crisis. What is that one quality you admired about her?
I have an absolute soft spot for all the South Indians, and I feel Samantha is one of those very disciplined artists. Despite all the health issues that were going on, she was just so good on the screen. When you see Citadel, you know how amazing she was, and the whole action and everything around it was so perfectly done. She is a star.
One myth about the music industry you would like to bust?
I feel one myth, which is a stigma, is that outsiders will never be given the equal chance. I feel like if you’re somebody who’s been working really hard and you know that you will do anything for your passion, then there’s nobody who can stop you from winning this industry.
Many female artists have complained about sexism pertaining to the music industry. What is your take on it?
Every era will have something that you will not like. It will be boring if you will not have anything to fight for. I feel this is true. We do have sexism. We do have, you know, a place where women might not get the same amount of work or the same quality of work in the industry. But that’s what we are fighting for. That’s what we are going towards. And I feel people like Alia Bhatt, people like Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, and Beyoncé, Jessie J, and soon Shruti, we will be bringing a lot of revolution to this thing.
