EXCLUSIVE: ‘Lala Hardayal’ Neil Bhoopalam Reveals Why He Said Yes To The Revolutionaries, Admits, “It’s Very Difficult To Understand Their Choice”

Neil Bhoopalam has made his mark in showbiz by playing strong and diverse characters across films, series and different mediums. The actor has often taken up roles that allow him to explore different shades of human emotions, and his latest project, The Revolutionaries, offered him another opportunity to step into a completely different world. In the series, Neil plays Lala Hardayal, a historical figure who was closely associated with India’s revolutionary movement.

For Neil, it was not just the period setting that made The Revolutionaries interesting. The fact that the show was created and written by Nikkhil Advani, along with the opportunity to explore India in the early 1900s, played a major role in his decision to come on board.

Neil Bhoopalam On Saying Yes To The Revolutionaries

Talking about what first caught his attention about The Revolutionaries, Neil Bhoopalam said, “The first thing that caught my attention was that it was Mr Nikkhil Advani who had created and written the show. To be part of a canvas set in the early 1900s and showcase India during that period was extremely interesting. It was a world that I was being invited to be a part of, and that was the biggest temptation for me.”

The actor has also been seen playing intense and powerful characters in the past. However, Neil believes that being offered such roles is simply a matter of good fortune for him. He shared, “With regard to playing characters with a certain strength and intensity, I think that’s just my good fortune. I feel lucky as an actor that directors and producers have trusted me with such fantastic characters. So yes, that was also something that made me say yes. And getting the opportunity to play Lala Hardayal was really something special because I got to research the man and tap into his world.”

Neil: It’s Very Difficult To Completely Understand The DecisIons Made By Revolutionaries

Playing a historical character also meant that Neil Bhoopalam had to understand the world in which Lala Hardayal lived. For the actor, one of the biggest challenges was imagining a time when people did not have the distractions that are a part of modern life. He explained, “I think with historical characters, you have to first understand what life would have been like during that time. Today, we have so many distractions, whether it is technology, social media or even our idea of what a good life should look like. Those things can influence the way we think and live.”

He further said, “In those times, life was much simpler, and there weren’t too many distractions of that kind. Understanding what was truly important to these characters, and how they could give up their lives to fight for freedom, was something that was difficult for me to fully understand at first.”

Neil Bhoopalam admitted that the decision made by revolutionaries to put their lives at risk was something he had to spend considerable time thinking about. He said, “As an individual, it is very difficult to completely understand that choice because most people would rather continue living their lives and protecting themselves and their families than willingly enter a war-like situation. But these revolutionaries chose to fight for freedom. Understanding that mindset and what it meant for my character was something I spent a lot of time thinking about.”

Over the years, Neil has experimented with different roles, emotions, situations and looks. According to him, the biggest factor when choosing a project is whether the story genuinely interests him. He shared, “I have played many different kinds of roles and explored different human emotions, situations and costumes. But ultimately, what I look for in a script is something that genuinely interests me. I always think about it from the perspective of an audience member. If I would want to watch a series, film or play, then I would want to be a part of it as an actor.”

Neil Bhoopalam added, “There are some stories that come your way and you immediately feel that this story has to be told and needs to reach the audience. The Revolutionaries was one of those projects for me.”

Neil also expressed his gratitude towards the team behind the series for giving him the opportunity to play Lala Hardayal. He signed off saying, “I am eternally grateful to Mr Nikkhil Advani, his team and our producers at Emmay Entertainment for giving me this opportunity to be part of such a prestigious show.
