EXCLUSIVE: Mona Singh reveals she dealt with self-doubt after a publication called her ‘podgy’: They put a woman down, I felt bad

Actor Mona Singh who rose to fame after starring in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin is one of the popular actresses in the industry. The show became a huge hit back in 2003. However, with success, she also received some heavy criticism when they weighed her down due to her weight. This created a self-doubt in herself and she felt bad about it. While speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Mona revealed how she was once called ‘podgy’ (chubby).

When asked if she ever had that sense of self-doubt in her career. The Laal Singh Chaddha actor said, “Yes, I did.” Recalling an incident, she continued, “I was clicked at a party, it was right after Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, I was on a break. I was eating, I was having fun, I didn’t care about how I was looking. I went to a party, I got clicked and there was this article that said ‘Mona seemed a bit podgy.’ God, I was like really? Is this news for you, is that journalism? You’re putting a woman down, you don’t care about her achievements or who she is and what she has done in life. You’re seeing her weight, I felt so bad, I was like really, I mean that’s all they see in a person.”

“The thing about our mentality is whenever we meet someone after a long time the only thing we discuss is weight. ‘Oh, you’ve lost weight, oh you have put on weight.’ What is this conversation? They’re so superficial. What is happening in your life, what are you doing, have you tried anything new, have you travelled somewhere? Those are the conversations to have. As a woman, we go through so many changes internally. There are days I am not feeling good, there are days where I’m feeling bloated. I’m not feeling so confident about myself but I carry on with my life. I don’t remind myself all day ‘Oh, it’s a bad day, I’m bloated, I’m bloated.’ I don’t do it, I accept it gracefully. It’s my body it will keep changing with time,” Mona added.
