Using AI in today’s era for anything seems to be a convenient option, but casting director Mukesh Chhabra disagrees with AI replacing humans in the casting process. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, he opened up on how data sorting in casting can be done with AI, but it lacks observation skills. Mukesh also highlights that every film requires characters with specific dialects.
Mukesh Chhabra On AI Helping One In Casting
When asked if AI can help you find the character through your databases with 3 prompts, Mukesh Chhabra disagreed. He said, “Nahi yaar, nahi ho sakta. Aap usko, AI ko, itna saara instruction dete dete thak jaaoge. Toh human connection hota hai na, wo better hota hai. Aap jab samajhte ho baat ko… truly samajhte ho, dhoondte ho — wo better hota hai. Because woh impulsive feeling ki baat hoti hai, yaar. Aap aisa brief kabhi likh hi nahi sakte ho. Aapko personality kya chahiye na, woh casting hoti hai —yeh intuition-based industry hai. Haan, kyunki brief kya hai? Aapki personality kaisi hai? Uska attitude kaisa hoga? Uska bolne ka tareeka kaisa hoga? Woh culturally kaisa hoga? Woh AI se nahi hoga. Yeh bachcha, abhi mujhe ek chhota…Arey, bachche ki personality kaise judge karoge?”
He added, “Har bachcha alag hota hai, uska attitude alag hota hai, uski personality alag hoti hai, uska bolne ka tareeka alag hota hai. Aapko dhoondna hai ki, Chillar Party ke bachche alag-alag dikhne chahiyein, ya Super 30 mein alag-alag dikhne chahiyein, wo AI se nahi aayega. Aapko bachchon ko milke, samajh ke, ek room mein unko kudna padega. 100 bachche aayenge, phir pata chalega —’ Yeh bachcha Jhangiya ke liye accha hai’, ‘Yeh bachchi Bajrangi ki Munni bahut acchi hai’, ‘Yeh Super 30 waale mere bachche ko le rahe hain…’ Tab aapko dekh ke at least, date mera sort ho sakta hai is cheez se.”
Mukesh Chhabra On AI Sorting Data With Prompts
During the same interview, the casting director accepts that AI can sort data but not talent. He said, “Data sort ho sakta hai. Data toh waise bhi sort karti hai na. See, maine aapko 10,000 log de diye hain, 20 se 25 saal ke beech mein. Lekin woh 10,000 ki alag-alag personalities hain. Aapko kya personality chahiye, woh bahut important hai. Aapka attitude kya chahiye? Mere character ka cultural difference kya hai? Uska economic background kya hai? Woh kahaan pe padhai karta hai? Uski family background kya hai? State kahaan pe fix hua hai? Language kya-kya bolta hai? Woh dikhne mein soft hai, angry hai, funny hai, dominating hai, strong personality hai, weak personality hai — yeh sab alag-alag personalities hain, har aadmi ki alag hoti hai. Aapko woh dhoondhna padta hai. Main aapko apni company ka saara data de deta hoon — aap casting karke dikha do. Usse nahi hota hai.”
Concluding, he said, “Aapko sun ke, samajh ke, kis-kis par focus karna hai, woh important hota hai, kyunki tabhi toh kehte hain na: agar aapne aadhi casting theek kar di, toh aapka aadha kaam toh ho hi gaya. Aap chaar bachchon mein se decide karo kaunsa… bacche toh sab acche hote hain na, par aap kaise bologe ki bachcha accha nahi ya accha hai? Lekin un chaaron ki personalities alag-alag hain — unka bolne ka tareeka alag hai, unka naraaz hone ka tareeka alag hai, unka gussa karne ka tareeka alag hai, unka khush hone ka tareeka alag hai, unki hansi ka tareeka alag hai, unka rone ka tareeka alag hai, unka baithne ka tareeka ekdum alag hai, unka react karne ka tareeka bahut alag hai. Toh yeh alag-alag traits samajhna bahut zaroori hai casting mein.”
