Over the years, we have seen encouraging progress in how women are represented on screen and in the opportunities available to them, but the journey towards true equality is ongoing. What gives me hope is that today there are more voices, more perspectives and a growing awareness about telling stories that reflect women as complex, independent and multifaceted individuals. Celebrating women also means continuing to support, uplift and create spaces where they can thrive.”

This marks a global occasion dedicated to honouring women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements while advocating for gender equality. In 2026, the observance falls on a Sunday, marking the 115th anniversary of the first international gathering.

2026 Theme

The year’s themes emphasise crucial aspects of gender equality: the United Nations’ theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” underscores that women worldwide possess only about 64% of the legal rights that men do. Complementing this, the IWD website promotes the theme Give to Gain. It fosters a spirit of generosity and collective effort to advance gender equality through shared support and collaboration.
