Actress Jiah Khan committing suicide in 2013 sent shockwaves through the nation. It was reported Jiah hung herself at her Juhu apartment on June 3, 2013. Jiah Khan made her Bollywood debut with Amitabh Bachchan in Nishabd. Later on, she went on to play notable roles in blockbuster films like Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini, and Akshay Kumar starrer Houseful.

After her untimely death, Sooraj Pancholi who was dating Jiah was accused of abetment to suicide. However, her death was a mystery for all as several shocking details were emerging during the probe. Federal agencies had to take over the case when the evidence was in smoke and mirrors. While her mother claimed it to be a homicide, Sooraj, on the other hand, denied those allegations.

Now, after 10 years, the court decided to give closure on the Jiah Khan death case. But before the final verdict is announced, take a look at the timeline of her death. It will give you an idea of what has happened so far.

Jiah Khan death:

Jiah Khan died by suicide in June and was found dead in her Juhu apartment. Her body was found by her mother Rabia around 10:45 pm.

Jiah Khan depression:

The actor’s mortal remains were taken to post-mortem and several people including Sooraj Pancholi were questioned. Her mother then revealed that she was suffering from depression.

Jiah Khan letter:

Later, a six-page letter was found on June 7, 2013, that revealed the shocking details of the tumultuous relationship with Sooraj. The letter reportedly talked about her intimate relationship, physical abuse, and mental and physical torture.

Sooraj Pancholi was arrested:

With the biggest evidence, the Juhu police arrested him and booked him under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Sooraj Pancholi’s bail:

On June 21, 2013, Sooraj’s bail plea was rejected by the court. However, he was granted bail on July 1, signing a bond of Rs 50,000. He was also asked to surrender his passport. On July 2, the court acquitted Sooraj, stating he was not accountable for Jiah Khan’s suicide.

Jiah Khan’s mother’s plea:

In October, Rabia then pleaded to the court for a detailed investigation of the case. A year after Jiah’s death, the High Court transferred the case from Juhu police to the Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI).

Aditya Pancholi filed a defamation case:

After the case was transferred to CBI, a defamation suit was filed against her worth Rs 100 crore by Sooraj Pancholi’s father Aditya Pancholi.

Raid at Pancholi residence:

On May 15, 2015, CBI conducted a raid at their residence and in June, Sooraj was questioned by the officials.

Chargesheet against Sooraj Pancholi:

On December 9, 2015, CBI filed a chargesheet against Sooraj Pancholi, alleging abetment to suicide. On August 1, 2016, the officials ruled out the possibility of murder and stated she died by suicide. However, British forensic expert Jason Payne-James claimed her suicide was staged. Later, Aditya dismissed those claims.

Rabia’s open letter:

Rabia asked for a Special Investigation Team for the investigation which was later rejected by the court. Due to this, she even penned a letter, seeking help from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sooraj Pancholi’s plea:

In October 2017, Sooraj Pancholi filed a plea at the Bombay High Court, requesting an expedition in the trial proceedings. Nonetheless, in January 2018, CBI rejected the plea for further investigation

Sooraj Pancholi denied charges:

On January 30, 2018, the court accused Sooraj Pancholi of abetment to suicide. However, the actor denied all the charges and pleaded innocence.

Sooraj Pancholi on Jiah Khan’s case:

In a 2019 interview with Pinkvilla, Sooraj was quoted saying, “I was put in the anda cell at the Arthur Road jail which is the most secluded cell,” he said. “You have no contact with anyone and you don’t even get newspapers. I was completely numb. At that point, nothing mattered. All that I kept thinking was that I lost someone who I loved.

Final verdict on Jiah Khan’s case:

The court will pronounce its judgement tomorrow, April 28, 2023, on the Jiah Khan death case. Sooraj’s family is positive and anxious about the verdict.
