Surrogacy has become a heated topic of debate in social circles. Even in today’s day and age, there’s a stigma that surrounds surrogacy. Bollywood movies have often dealt with the concept of surrogate motherhood. The increased acceptance of this method can also be seen in its portrayal in Indian films. A lot of movies have dealt with and portrayed the issue in their own unique way. From Mimi, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke to Vicky Donor, here’s a list of Bollywood movies that tackled the subject of surrogacy.

Bollywood movies that broke surrogacy stereotypes:

1. Mimi

The film is a loose remake of the 2010 Marathi language film titled Mala Aai Vhhaychy! The story is about Mimi (Kriti Sanon) a Bollywood aspirant who signs up to be a surrogate for an American couple to fund her Bollywood dreams, without thinking about the social, emotional and legal implications of her decision. The film also stars, Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Supriya Pathak, Manoj Pahwa.

2. Good Newwz

Good Newwz revolves around two couples trust with in vitro fertilization (IVF).  However, trouble ensues when they find that the sperm of each couple has been mixed with the other. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani in the lead roles,  directed by debutante Raj Mehta and produced by Dharma Productions and Cape of Good Films.

3. Vicky Donor

The concept is set against the background of sperm donation and infertility within a Bengali-Punjabi household. The film stars debutantes Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam in lead roles with Annu Kapoor and Dolly Ahluwalia in pivotal supporting roles.

3. Chori Chori Chupke Chupke

Raj (Salman Khan) and Priya (Rani Mukerji), a married couple, hire Madhubala (Preity Zinta), a prostitute, as the surrogate mother of their child. Trouble brews when Madhubala falls in love with Raj and insists on keeping the child. Directed by Abbas–Mustan, with screenplay and story from Javed Siddiqui and Neeraj Vora respectively.

4. Filhaal

Tabu and Sushmita Sen are seen in powerful roles as best friends who are always there for each other. While Rewa Singh (Tabu) isn’t able to conceive due to birth complications, Sia Sheth (Sushmita) offers to be their surrogate mother. Meghna Gulzar, daughter of lyricist Gulzar and actress Raakhee, made her directorial debut with the 2002 film.

5. Doosri Dulhan

Renu (Sharmila Tagore) and her husband, Anil (Victor Banerjee), are devastated when she cannot bear children after a miscarriage. Thereafter, he visits a brothel and asks a young Chanda (Shabana Azmi) to carry and give birth to a baby for his family, directed by Lekh Tandon. The film was inspired by the American film The Baby Maker.
