DC The Bloody Valentine Review

Arun Matheswaran’s DC – which sees Lokesh Kanagaraj make his debut as a lead actor, is raw, engaging, and a musical you will not want to miss. Loosely adapted from the novel Devdas, this action triller is unlike any we’ve seen earlier. While mainly a violent film – filled with bloody scenes that could make a weak stomach turn, the film still touches upon topics of friendship, love, addiction and family issues in a very different manner than anticipated.

DC The Bloody Valentine is centred on Devadas, aka Das (Lokesh) as he challenges those in power to do whatever he and his gang want to. Having spent time in jail for avenging his mother’s death, Das sets out on a mission to make the police pay after their robbery leads to the death of an innocent villager. While on the run – after taking the law into their hands, Das and his gang, meet Parvathi (Sanjana Krishnamoorthy) in Chennai. However, an ally soon snitches on them leading to a tragic death and capture of Das.

In a bid to get even with the betrayer, Das and his gang infiltrate a brothel, where they meet Chandra (Wamiqa Gabbi) a prostitute. Following a bloody exchange in the whore house, Chandra joins the gangs as they attempt to escape the police and cross over into Andra Pradesh. During this journey, spark fly in more ways than one leading to more death, confession and revelations that are enough to make ad break relationships.

Does Das have a tragic end as we’ve seen in other adaptation of Devdas or is their light at the end of the tunnel for his this time? To know the answer you will need to watch DC The Bloody Valentine and here’s our honest review of the action-packed thriller.

What Works

When Anirudh Ravichander and Lokesh Kanagaraj work together (in any capacity), you are going to be treated with amazing music and DC The Bloody Valentine is no different. The entire album – especially the Ragas, have the most impact. Lokesh, Wamiqa Gabbi and the guys who are part of Das’ gang all deliver impactful performances.

What Doesn’t Work

It seems like the makers bit more than they could chew as the narrative does seem all over, especially in the first half. Having watched the dubbed version, the dialogues don’t have the desired impact and feel lacking.

Star Cast

After impressing fans as a writer and director with films like Kaithi, Master, Vikram, Leo, Coolie and more, Lokesh Kanagaraj doesn’t disappoint as an actor. He manages to portray all aspects of Das’ life – be it the rawness, the short temper, the deadliness or even the softness. He deserves love and admiration.

Wamiqa Gabbi as Chandra is a surprise. She delivers as both a naive prostitute and someone – who when given freedom and trusted, can turn deadly. Sanjana Krishnamoorthy as is a bliss onscreen despite limited screentime.

Conclusion

If you are a Lokesh fan, make sure you watch this film. While the film does have flaws, Anirudh’s stellar music over powers it and makes it worth every rupee you will pay for the seat.
