Sanjay Dutt outside jail

Tomorrow, on February 25, 2016, Sanjay Dutt will finally be a free bird. He will walk out free from Yerwada Jail after serving his jail term. In the year 2013, Supreme Court convicted him for illegally possessing arms and ammunition in 1993 serial blast case and sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment. He then applied for remission and the court granted him relief on the basis of good behavior.

Preparations are now in full swing for Sanjay’s release. He is expected to fly down to Mumbai in a chartered plane. His family and friends are rejoicing his freedom. But, a recent news which has made it to the headlines might dampen their happiness. A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Bombay High Court seeking cancelation of Dutt’s release.

According to the reports, a social activist Pradeep Bhalekar has urged the Bombay High Court to cancel the government’s decision to grant relief to Sanjay Dutt. In the petition filed, the petitioner has stated, “The remission granted to Dutt is wrong and illegal. What is the good behaviour and conduct that has been held as a ground for granting him remission and reducing his sentence? What about all the other convicts especially in petty offenses who are rotting in jail. They have also filed applications seeking remission but there has been no order on those.”

The petitioners lawyer will present his case in front of the bench tomorrow.
