While the two shared a strong bond and worked together in several films, Aruna had recalled instances where professional insecurities created unexpected rifts between them. Scroll down to read more.
Aruna Irani Claims Rekha Had Her Scenes Edited Out
Veteran actress Aruna Irani once opened up about a challenging chapter in her professional equation with Rekha, revealing that their long-standing friendship didn’t always translate seamlessly on set. Both actresses were among the most prominent faces of the 1970s and 1980s, admired for their craft and enduring presence in the industry.
While Rekha was celebrated for her captivating screen aura, Aruna built her legacy through versatile supporting roles that consistently left a mark. The two shared screen space in films like Aurat Aurat Aurat, Kashmakash, and Bhagwaan Dada. However, behind their on-screen collaborations, Aruna had earlier hinted at moments of professional discomfort.
In an interview with Lehren Retro, Aruna recalled how her performances sometimes made Rekha conscious. Speaking about Aurat Aurat Aurat, she revealed that the film took nearly six years to complete and featured her in a strong, central role—something many actors would aspire to. However, parts of her performance were eventually trimmed. She said, “Producers ki wajah se picture bante bante 6 saal lag gaye. Mera bahut accha role tha, central character tha. Anybody would pray for that kind of role. Fir kaafi logon ki wajah se kaat dena pada. Rekha ji humari, voh dene hi nahi deti thi, ki nahi Aruna ka role bhut accha hai.”
Aruna Irani Reveals Rekha Got Her Replaced In Mangalsutra
Aruna also revisited another incident from the 1981 film Mangalsutra. She shared that despite being signed for a role and receiving her payment, she was later dropped from the project. When she questioned the producer, she was told that Rekha had objected to her casting.
Recalling her confrontation with Rekha, Aruna said, “Rekha removed me from a film even though she was a good friend of mine. She still is. But when she took me out of Mangalsutra, I asked the producer, ‘Why did you remove me even after paying my signing amount?’ He said, ‘Rekha ji never wanted you in the film.’ When I confronted her, Rekha told me, ‘Aruna, if you pull off the role too well emotionally, I’ll start looking like a vamp in the film.’ So she cut me off.”
Despite these professional setbacks, Aruna had maintained that their friendship endured over the years, even if their working relationship occasionally faced strain.
