Shekhar Suman Wants Debut Film Utsav’s Re-Release

Shekhar Suman revisited his early days in cinema, reflecting on his debut film Utsav, his experience working with icons like Rekha and Shashi Kapoor, and why he believes the film deserves a theatrical comeback in today’s times. Speaking about his journey in a conversation with India Today, Suman recalled how Utsav pushed him far outside his comfort zone. He shared that the role was completely unlike his real personality, making it both challenging and defining at the start of his career.

With the growing trend of re-releases in Bollywood, Suman feels the Shashi Kapoor-produced classic is ideal for a modern-day re-release. He said, “Aaj hi release hone chahiye. It was way ahead of its time. And today, I think people would have really appreciated that. The kind of music, costumes, cinematography, and jo mahal banaya tha, which was so beautiful. So, so beautiful. Rekha looked like a billion bucks.” He also mentioned that the film had been shot in both English and Hindi versions. Though the English cut was never released and has since been lost to time.

Shekhar Suman Revisits His First Day On Set

Recalling his first day on set, Suman spoke about the pressure he felt as a newcomer working under Shashi Kapoor’s faith in him. He said he was overwhelmed by the responsibility but managed to deliver due to his theatre background. The actor also remembered being deeply encouraged when senior artists appreciated his performance.

Shekhar fondly recalled seeing Rekha for the first time during a shoot before he had become an actor himself. Further describing how surreal it felt to later share screen space with her. He admitted he was completely in awe of her talent and presence. Adding that she brought her characters to life with remarkable intensity and dedication.

Reflecting on discussions around nepotism, Suman credited Shashi Kapoor for giving him a break without any industry backing. He expressed gratitude for being cast so early in his journey, calling it a rare opportunity for someone new to the industry. Furthermore, attributing it to destiny.
