Thalapathy Vijay led Jana Nayagan is once again in the news due to ongoing certification issues. Although it was initially scheduled for release on January 9th, the film’s launch was postponed because it did not receive certification from the CBFC. Currently, a case is pending in the Madras High Court concerning the film’s certification and release.
Vijay Thalapathy Led Jana Nayagan Faces Major Setback
The latest hearing on January 27th did not favour the film, resulting in another delay. During the hearing, a division bench of the Madras High Court overturned a previous order that had directed the CBFC to grant certification immediately. The court clarified that the case should not have been examined at this stage by the single judge and sent it back for a new hearing. Consequently, the certification process remains on hold, casting further uncertainty over the film’s release.
Jana Nayagan, which was initially set to release during Pongal, faced multiple postponements due to certification hurdles. With the recent court ruling, the filmmakers will need to reappear before the single-judge bench and await a new decision, leaving fans and industry insiders eager for updates on the film’s fate.
About Jana Nayagan Controversy
Initially, on December 22, 2025, the producer received a communication from the Regional Officer of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in Chennai. The message stated that a five-member examining committee, which had viewed the film, recommended it for screening and issuance of a censor certificate.
However, following a complaint from one of the committee members, the CBFC Chairperson decided to put that decision on hold. The matter was referred to a revising committee, and this was communicated to the producer on January 5.
The producers then approached the Madras High Court after facing difficulties in obtaining the censor certificate. The court initially directed the CBFC to grant the film a UA 16+ rating. But later, a division bench overturned this order. The reason cited was that the CBFC hadn’t been given enough opportunity to present its case. The case has now been sent back to a single judge for a fresh hearing, effectively restarting the legal process.
Why Did The CBFC Object?
During the court proceedings, a complaint from a CBFC examining committee member emerged, raising concerns such as:
- The film contains an army-related emblem.
- The examining panel lacked a defense expert.
These objections are being examined more thoroughly in the upcoming hearing. This is why the CBFC remains hesitant to approve the film without further review.
Why Is The Model Code Of Conduct Involved?
The controversy has taken on a political dimension because of the timing. Jana Nayagan was originally scheduled for release on January 9, ahead of the Pongal festival. After that window closed, the filmmakers considered releasing it in late January or February. However, with the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections—most likely in April—the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) could be implemented once election dates are announced. Under the MCC, films believed to have political implications may face restrictions or delays, potentially halting release altogether.
This situation echoes the 2019 controversy when a biopic about Prime Minister Narendra Modi was barred from release during the general elections over similar concerns. Jana Nayagan is also seen as Vijay’s last film before he transitions into full-time politics. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is preparing for its first election, making the film’s release politically and symbolically significant.
What’s Next?
With the case back in the hands of a single judge at the Madras High Court, the CBFC will have an opportunity to formally present its objections. The outcome of this hearing will determine whether the film receives certification in time or faces further delays that could push its release closer to the election period, when the MCC might impose additional restrictions.
