Alia played the titular role of Gangu in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial. It is loosely based on the true story of Gangubai Harjivandas, popularly known as Gangubai Kothewali, whose life was documented in S. Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai. It told the story of a young Gangu who is sold into prostitution by her lover and how she swings the destiny in her favour by becoming the leader of the community and raising voice for their issues. The film even had its premiere at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival.  Upon release, Alia received unanimous praise for her nuanced, sensitive and mature portrayal in the film while commercially too, the film was a success crossing Rs 100 crore at the box office.
