Sunny Deol’s much-awaited Partition drama has officially undergone a major change. After months of speculation surrounding the film’s title, the makers have now confirmed that Lahore 1947 will release as Batwara 1947. Along with the announcement, the team also unveiled a powerful motion poster that offers the first intense glimpse into the world of the film and confirms its theatrical release date as August 14, 2026.
Batwara 1947 FIRST Look Out!
Aamir Khan Productions and Sunny Deol shared the motion poster on Instagram with the caption: “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage. Watch #Batwara1947 in theatres from 14th August 2026.”
The newly released teaser officially introduces Batwara 1947, previously developed under the working title Lahore 1947. The motion poster opens with the line: “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage.”
Soon after, a fiery slash cuts across the screen and tears through a map, symbolising the horrors and divide of Partition. The visuals then shift to scenes of chaos, smoke, burning streets and frightened crowds trying to escape violence.
The teaser also offers brief glimpses of Sunny Deol’s character running alongside a steam train during the turmoil. Other key characters also appear through the flames, including Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi and Karan Deol.
The motion poster concludes with Sunny Deol standing at the centre while holding a blazing torch, before finally unveiling the title Batwara 1947.
About The Talk Surrounding Title Change
Interestingly, the official title change comes months after reports claimed that the makers were considering replacing Lahore 1947. At the time, speculation suggested that concerns around the title’s association with a Pakistani city may have prompted discussions internally.
However, back in March, Aamir Khan had dismissed such rumours during an interaction with Bollywood Hungama. “Where did you hear that? No, the title of our film has not changed. As of now, it is Lahore 1947, and that’s how I would like it to be.”
Batwara 1947 is adapted from celebrated playwright Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamya E Nai, which explores identity, humanity and displacement in the aftermath of India’s Partition. The film is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and marks his reunion with Sunny Deol after iconic films like Ghayal, Damini and Ghatak.
Earlier, Santoshi had spoken about collaborating once again with both Aamir Khan and Sunny Deol. He said, “It’s a reunion with the most talented people. I worked with Aamir in Andaz Apna Apna, and this time he is collaborating as a producer. On the other hand, with Sunny Deol, we made the most loved films like Ghayal, Damini, and Ghatak.”
The ensemble cast of Batwara 1947 includes Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol and Ali Fazal.
