Lahore 1947 To Be Renamed Batwara 1947_

The upcoming Independence Day release, which marks the reunion of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, may be undergoing a name change. A recent report indicates that the film will now be titled Batwara 1947. Produced by Aamir Khan, Lahore 1947 is slated to release during Independence Day week this year. Directed by Santoshi and starring Sunny Deol, the film explores the Partition between India and Pakistan. Now, reports suggest that before its scheduled release in 2026, the makers are considering renaming the film from Lahore 1947 to Batwara 1947. Based on the play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai by Asghar Wajahat, the new title could help audiences better understand the film’s story. Here’s what we know so far.

Lahore 1947 To Be Renamed Batwara 1947?

According to reports from Mid-Day and Bollywood Hungama, the period drama is expected to be retitled Batwara 1947. A source told Bollywood Hungama that the filmmakers prefer the new name. But all stakeholders need to agree before the change is officially announced. The title could be changed in the coming weeks as the film approaches its release.

Written and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Lahore 1947 is adapted from Wajahat’s 1989 play. Set during the Partition in Lahore, the film has been staged worldwide. It includes Karachi, New York, Dubai, and Lahore itself. With a theatrical release scheduled for August 13, just before Independence Day, the new title may better reflect the film’s storyline.

About Lahore 1947

This marks the first collaboration between Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan. At IFFI 2025, Aamir shared that before his passing, the late actor Dharmendra had the chance to see Sunny in this drama. Alongside Deol, Lahore 1947 features Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh. Producer Aamir is also rumoured to have a supporting role. Cinematography is handled by Santosh Sivan, with AR Rahman composing the period-appropriate music. Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi’s husband, is writing the lyrics.

Based on Wajahat’s play, the story follows a Muslim family from Lucknow that moves to Lahore during the Partition. They are given a haveli abandoned by a Hindu family—or so they believe. To their shock, they discover an old Hindu matriarch who refuses to leave her ancestral home. As they navigate their new living arrangements, the strangers form unexpected bonds.
