Bobby Deol is currently enjoying one of the strongest phases of his career. After winning praise for projects like Animal, Aashram and The Ba***ds of Bollywood, the actor is gearing up for the release of Bandar. During a recent appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, Bobby looked back on one of the most difficult chapters of his professional journey, losing Jab We Met, a film he had actively helped develop before it eventually went to Shahid Kapoor.
Bobby Deol Recalls Being Replaced In Jab We Met By Shahid Kapoor
The actor recalled how deeply the setback affected him at a time when he was already struggling to find the right projects. Bobby Deol revealed that he had first connected with filmmaker Imtiaz Ali after watching Socha Na Tha and was convinced that they should collaborate.
Reflecting on the episode, Bobby said, “That story is done now. We’re friends. My heart got broken because I needed a film like this during that phase of my career.” He further explained, “I had great confidence in Imtiaz since the time when he was making Socha Na Tha with Abhay. When I watched the rough cut, I was so taken in and excited by his work. I thought he’s such a good director; I should work with him.”
For the unversed, Bobby had been pitching the project to production houses and had also helped bring Kareena Kapoor on board. However, after several delays, the film eventually moved ahead with the same director and leading lady, but with Shahid Kapoor in the lead role. Released in 2007, Jab We Met went on to become one of Bollywood’s most celebrated romantic dramas.
Bobby Deol Reveals Pitching Production Houses For The Imtiaz Ali Film
Recalling how events unfolded, Bobby shared, “That’s when we first decided we’d make a film together. But when your market position isn’t good, nobody backs you. So much time passed trying to get the film started. The production house I pitched it to said Imtiaz is a very expensive director. But the same production house ended up making the film with Imtiaz, and with the same heroine I’d gotten on board.”
Despite the disappointment, Bobby said he eventually learned to channel those emotions into personal growth rather than resentment. “These things do happen. It never happens that only good things happen to someone,” he said.
The actor added, “When I began working on myself, I decided the hurt and anger I’ve gone through should become my strength. Because you can’t just keep crying about it. These things made me a better person and a better actor. I’ve only learnt from them. I don’t have any qualms with anyone.”
Bobby Deol On Being Heartbroken
Interestingly, Bobby had spoken about the same incident last year on Raj Shamani’s podcast Figuring Out. At the time, he admitted that the experience left him heartbroken. “I was heartbroken; I was not getting work. I was doing films with certain directors… They were typical Bollywood films. I have nothing against Imtiaz. I love the guy; he’s one of the most talented directors we have in the industry. But, I guess, in that moment in his career, he was also insecure and had to make choices. But it happened in a bad way.”
Imtiaz Ali’s Response
Imtiaz Ali, however, has previously shared a different perspective. In a 2023 interview with The Lallantop, the filmmaker said he waited for nearly two years to make the film. However, repeated delays and financial pressures eventually forced him to move ahead without the actor.
Imtiaz recalled, “Socha Na Tha got over, but I still didn’t make the film for two years because I wanted Bobby to start it (Jab We Met). But he was getting other offers from big directors, so he was waiting for that to happen. He kept postponing my film, but then a time came when I didn’t find it correct because a lot of time went by.”
He further added, “Because I did Socha Na Tha for five years and I didn’t do a film for two years after that, it was putting financial strain on me. Then I told Bobby, ‘Let’s not make this film. Let’s shake our hands and decide we will not do this film together because then our thing will be affected.’”
On the work front, Bobby Deol will next be seen in Anurag Kashyap’s Bandar. It is scheduled to release in theatres on June 5, 2026. The actor also continues to expand his lineup across Hindi and regional cinema following the success of Animal and Aashram.
