Irrfan Khan was one of the most loved actors in the industry. Irrfan passed away on April 29, 2020, after a long battle with neuroendocrine tumour. Recently, we got in touch with Irrfan Khan’s wife and writer Sutapa Sikdar for Bollywood Bubble’s Her Story and she opened up about the late actor’s cancer journey, their love story and more. She also recalled the late actor’s last visit to the hospital.

Irrfan Khan’s wife Sutapa Sikdar said, “What had happened was he caught an infection. He has been catching these infections because he had a stent … it was in his bile duct for it took the bile to flow and because it was a foreign body so he would get infections. So it was not the first time but what was happening was no oral medicine was working so the docs said ‘get him to the hospital and we will do intravenous and 2-3 mein theek hojaega and intravenous dekhe he will come back home.’”

Sutapa continued, “She (doctor) said that we know he can’t do without you and hospital at least we are there, so don’t come. And that was at time of Covid. So she said Covid hai mat aao, toh maine kaha theek hai (She asked me not to come as its Covid and so I said ok) I was very scared to ask him because he would not, he would hate it to go without me anywhere during these times. For the first time, he said ‘don’t come. It’s okay’. And he said you also need rest so why don’t you rest it out for two days since I’ll be in the hospital. So he said you rest it out and 3 days mein toh aa jaunga na.. she’s saying na ki intravenous dekhe theek hojaega infection. So he went without me for the first time and he didn’t come back. This is the first hospital that he went alone. He was with a staff and Babil was also there.. The problem what was happening is infection kaha tha because sab test negative aarahe the. So what was the infection they couldn’t figure out. They did everything possible.”

So then, I felt that I was getting restless and he was deteriorating health-wise. I didn’t know what to do and Shevanti was saying its absolutely fine. And aisa karte karte woh do din panch din hogaya. And 6th day pe Babil said ‘mumma I don’t think it’s deteriorating so you come’ and I went,” she added.

Irrfan Khan and Sutapa Sikdar tied the knot in 1995. They have two sons – Babil and Ayan.
