Imtiaz Ali BACKS AR Rahman Amid Communal Remarks Backlash

Imtiaz Ali commented just days after AR Rahman addressed the backlash over his recent comments in an interview, clarifying his intentions. In support of the composer amid the ongoing controversy, filmmaker Ali suggested that Rahman’s remarks may have been “misconstrued” and emphasised that there is no communal bias within the film industry.

Imtiaz Ali Defends AR Rahman Amid Communal Remarks Controversy

Speaking to India Today, Imtiaz, who has collaborated with AR Rahman on several projects, including their latest film, Amar Singh Chamkila, defended the music composer. When asked about the controversy, Imtiaz stated, “No, I don’t think there is a communal bias in the film industry. I’ve been here for a long time, and I’ve never seen it. AR Rahman is one of the brightest figures I’ve met in the industry.”

He further added, “I don’t actually believe he made all the comments being attributed to him, or maybe they’ve been misconstrued. I know he did not say exactly what people are perceiving. I also don’t recall any incident where there was any communal bias or hostility.”

Rahman Responds To Backlash

This comes shortly after Rahman publicly responded to the backlash and clarified his stance. Reaffirming his love for India, the musician stated that it was never his intention to offend with his words. He emphasised that his goal has always been to serve the country through music and concluded his message with footage of his songs Maa Tujhe Salaam and Vande Mataram played during a cricket match.

Rahman explained, “Music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating, and honouring our culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher, and my home. I understand that sometimes intentions can be misunderstood. My purpose has always been to uplift and serve through music. I never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt.”

What Did AR Rahman Say?

Regarding his comments, Rahman told BBC Asian Network that he had never felt prejudice in Bollywood as a Tamil composer. He said, “Maybe I never realised it, maybe it was concealed by God, but I didn’t feel any of this. Over the past eight years, perhaps, because of a shift in power—where people who aren’t necessarily creative hold influence—it might be a communal thing… but it’s not in my face.” He also criticised the film Chhaava for exploiting divisiveness.

AR Rahman’s Projects

The Oscar-winning composer faced criticism for his remarks but later issued an apology, expressing regret for any ‘pain’ caused. Currently, Rahman is working on Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, collaborating with Grammy-winning composer Hans Zimmer. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Sunny Deol, and Yash, is scheduled for release during Diwali 2026.
