Indian Women Rising Ekta Kapoor, Guneet Monga and Tahira Kashyap

Filmmakers Ekta Kapoor, Guneet Monga and Tahira Kashyap have come together to launch, Indian Women Rising, a cinema collective. They aim to support and empower Indian female talent in cinema across the world. The project will also strive towards changing the status quo and amplify the voice of Indian female filmmakers.

Speaking about the collective, Guneet Monga (Founder & CEO, Sikhya Entertainment) said that out of total directors in India, the female directors constitute of less than five per cent.  She emphasised that these stats need to be changed. The producer feels that there’s a gold mine of talent in India and Indian Women Rising will bring the amazing women in the spotlight. She also said that Independent women creators will benefit from collective resources.

Writer-filmmaker Tahira Kashyap says that this collective will helo in disrupting the boxed notions about women. Whereas Ekta is excited about collaborating with like-minded people. The TV Czarina hopes to provide a platform to independent women filmmakers to showcase their talent and use their potentials. Ekta also said that when provided with the right opportunity and support, women can do wonders. With Indian Women Rising, she hopes more female filmmakers will come forward and shine with their work.

Announcing the news, Ekta took to her Instagram handle and wrote, “Indian Women Rising – A Cinema Collective, Of – By – For Women! With an endeavour to bring forth the unseen and unheard stories by imperative women creators of India, we present to you, @indianwomenrising, because when YOU shine, WE shine! ?Let’s rise, together! ?(sic)”

Any filmmaker, based in or outside India can apply at the collective. Initially, the collective will only consider finished films which can be a short, a documentary or a feature film. Marketing, sales and distribution push of these projects will be handled by the collective.

This is indeed a much-needed initiative spearheaded by Ekta, Guneet and Tahira. We hope it discovers many raw talents waiting for the right chance to show their spark.
