karan johar, alia bhatt, student of the year

One record that is proudly associated with the name of Karan Johar is that whenever he has sat on the director’s chair for a film, it has never failed commercially. Starting from his debut directorial Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 to his last directorial Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016, all of his films have been a success at the box office. Thus, it is quite unimaginable that he would have lost money on any of his directed films, but that is true and the filmmaker recently opened up about it.

During a recent appearance on the Masters’ Union podcast, Karan Johar had revealed that his 2012 directorial, Student Of The Year, which launched three of the most popular faces of Indian film industry today, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, eventually cost him losing money, even though it was declared a hit. He said, “Yash Chopra told me, ‘A film never fails, a budget does’. Like Student of the Year. I made a hit film, but lost money.” Just a few months ago, SOTY had completed a decade and the whole team had celebrated that feat. The filmmaker also added that the Telugu industry is the most lucrative regional industry in the country at the moment.

Karan also reiterated his views on actors demanding high fees in today’s time. He said, I might be murdered for saying this, but if you are opening to Rs 5 crore and you are asking me for Rs 20 crore, how is that fair? Delusion is the one disease that has no vaccination.” Karan first spoke about this subject in 2018 and he insists that the issue has only increased in the post-pandemic era. He added, “They’re all crazy! Crazy, with a capital ‘C’. They’re cuckoo, many of them. Just because their two films do well suddenly it’s all me, myself and I.”

On the work front, Karan is set to return as a director with his next theatrical release, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, which features Alia and Ranveer Singh in the lead, alongside veterans like Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi. He has also already announced that he will soon follow it with his next directorial which will be an action film.
