Lekha Washington REACTS To Relationship With Imran Khan Being Tagged ‘Love-Jihad’; Says, “My Family Is Open Minded, Respectful”

Lekha Washington, who is currently dating actor Imran Khan, has spoken out about what troubles her more than online trolling: being defined solely through her relationship. Recently, Lekha faced social media backlash after attending the premiere of Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos with Imran, with many users questioning their interfaith relationship. She has now responded to the controversy, especially the circulated videos that fueled hate.

In an interview with Moneycontrol, Lekha addressed the trolling she received for dating Imran and the false label of ‘love jihad’ that was attached to their relationship. Lekha said, “Videos of me being used to fuel hate and division are the exact opposite of what I stand for. I believe it’s best to handle this with humour — quite literally, to make light of the ridiculousness of it all.”

When asked about the comments regarding their interfaith relationship, she said, “My own family is open-minded, multicultural, and respectful of all, as is my partner’s family. I get to witness how a diverse, creative, and inclusive community supports each other.“

She added, “I feel incredibly lucky. I am deeply humbled by the kindness of the people around me.”

She shared her reaction to the backlash, saying, “Love Jihad — apparently it is being done to me, a part Burmese, Italian, Punjabi woman raised in South India, who moved to North India with a dad who’s Roman Catholic but agnostic — and I’m being ‘love-jihaded’ by a guy whose father is part Hindu and Scottish, and whose mother is Muslim. So I’m thinking, ‘Do Na Love Jihad,’ and I joke, ‘No, no. Instead, I make lights.’”

Imran and Lekha reportedly met within the same social circle and started dating in 2020. Rumours suggest they rented a sea-facing apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra from director Karan Johar. KJo is paying around Rs 9 lakh per month. Previously, Imran lived in a bungalow in Pali Hill, Bandra.

Lekha was previously in a relationship with journalist Pablo Mukherjee, an old friend of Imran’s. Imran was married to Avantika Malik until 2019. The couple share a daughter named Imara.
