Veteran actress Neena Gupta has revisited a longstanding behind-the-scenes memory from the set of the 1993 blockbuster Khalnayak, recalling how an uncomfortable body image comment by famed director Subhash Ghai left her upset early in her career. Gupta opened up about the incident during a candid conversation on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, reflecting on how the dynamics of filmmaking and her own perspective have evolved over time.
Neena Gupta Recalls Subhash Ghai’s ‘Humiliating’ Remark
In the podcast, Gupta recalled that while shooting the iconic song “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai,” Ghai asked the costume designer to “make her appear fuller,” a request tied to how she should look on screen. She said the experience left her frustrated at the time. “At that time, I felt very angry and thought it was inappropriate to say something like that. But now I feel he was just doing his job. He had a certain image in mind for the character in the song, and he expressed it plainly. I was new then, today I understand it differently.”
The actress described the padded bra request as distasteful and inappropriate in the context of how she initially felt, even if her understanding later shifted. The moment stands out in her early career, when she was still finding her footing in a competitive industry and navigating expectations about how women should look.

Beyond this anecdote, the actor also weighed in on broader societal attitudes during the same discussion, including how single women are perceived by society. She said that people often look at her differently in public because of her unmarried status, adding that in many communities, marriage alters how a woman is treated, regardless of her achievements. “If you get married, everything seems to become fine. In society, the moment you wear a mangalsutra, people think everything is perfect, even if things are actually falling apart inside,” she explained, noting how societal assumptions can overshadow reality.

She gained critical acclaim for roles in films such as Saajan Chale Sang Hum, Woh Chokri, Badhai Ho and Vadh 2, alongside notable appearances in television series and web projects.
