Typecasting is a very common practice in Bollywood. Often, actors become a target based on certain similar roles played in different projects, one such example being Emraan Hashmi, who is called the serial kisser. Nitin Rao’s recent collaboration was with Hashmi in Neeraj Pandey’s Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web. He has been well-known in Bollywood as well as the OTT Space. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Nitin Rao opened up about typecasting in Bollywood while talking about Emraan Hashmi. Scroll down to read what he said.
Nitin Rao On Emraan Hashmi Being Typecast In Bollywood And Shaping His Persona
Nitin Rao, known for frequently portraying antagonists in Bollywood, shared his thoughts on how the industry often places actors into specific on-screen images. When asked about typecasting in Bollywood, Nitin Rao said, “Dekho, starting mein kya hota hai, agar aap typecast ho rahe ho, toh ho jao. Koi baat nahi. Usse aap at least recognise toh ho jaoge. Uske baad aap tod loge. Emraan sir ne bhi toda hai na? Toh tod loge. Lekin pehle wahan tak pahunchna bhi zaroori hai. Toot jaati hai image, aisa nahi hai ki nahi toot sakti.”
The actor further added, “Mujhe lagta hai yeh market pe bhi depend karta hai. Bahut saare directors jab aapko dekhte hain, toh woh aapko kaise dekh rahe hain, woh important hai. Maan lo abhi mujhe dekhenge, toh mostly logon ko negative characters hi yaad aayenge — agar unhone mera purana kaam nahi dekha hai. Lekin agar purana kaam dekhenge, toh unhe samajh aayega ki nahi, yeh doosra kaam bhi kar sakta hai. Aap mera ‘Kaun Pravin Tambe?’ dekh lo. Usmein main clean-shaven hoon, log pehchaan hi nahi paate.”
Speaking about his co-star, he added, “Emraan sir ke saath bhi starting mein jab waise hi films ban rahi thi, shayad tab kisi ne risk nahi liya hoga. Shayad unhone bhi socha hoga ki pehle famous ho jaate hain, ek level tak pahunchte hain, phir image tod lenge. Aaj ki date mein image todna aasaan hai, kyunki aaj space zyada hai. Aapke paas OTT hai, films hain, OTT films alag hain, toh aap experiment kar sakte ho. Pehle shayad itna space nahi tha. Ab break karne ke liye opportunities zyada hain.”
