Adivi Sesh’s latest release Dacoit has entered theatres amid tough competition and intense box office chatter. The action thriller, directed by Shaneil Deo, arrived after a strategic delay to avoid clashing with Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar The Revenge. However, even with the shifted release, the film continues to face strong competition from the big-budget entertainer, which is still running successfully in its fourth week.
Adivi Sesh Refuses To Blame Dhurandhar For Dacoit’s Box Office
As discussions around its box office performance grow, Adivi Sesh has chosen to address the comparisons directly. When asked whether Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2 impacted Dacoit, he dismissed the speculation. “Honestly, who can say? I mean, had Dhurandhar not been around, had there not been a two-month IPL this time, or had Kantara and Vikram not been released day as Major…” he said to Hindustan Times, referencing how his previous film Major also faced multiple high-profile clashes and still found success. He then added, “But the destiny for this film has been beautifully positive, and I’m just grateful now.”
At the same time, questions have surfaced around the film’s ‘blockbuster’ label, especially after the makers celebrated its Rs 40-crore worldwide opening weekend. Responding to this, Sesh stood by the team’s intent. “To them it feels, ‘How can they?’ But at the end of the day, I’ll tell you one thing: everything about our film has come from an honest space,” he said.
The actor also highlighted the organic support the film has received from industry names like Allu Aravind and Nani. “For someone like Allu Aravind, Allu Arjun’s dad, and Bunny Vasu to say, ‘Hey, we want to talk about the movie, can you give us a stage to do so?’ is a big deal… And these are just honest things. I don’t have that kind of influence to get those kinds of big guys to talk.”
Adivi Sesh On Dacoit’s On Going Buzz
Meanwhile, Dacoit continues to hold steady at the box office. Although it has not yet fully recovered its budget, weekday trends remain encouraging. Sesh acknowledged the ongoing buzz and audience response, saying to Hindustan Times, “It makes you feel validated and vindicated. The audience’s love has been extraordinary. While I was connecting to your call, I just opened BookMyShow casually… And we are at 5,000 tickets an hour on a Tuesday morning. It means a lot to someone like me.”
Over the years, Adivi Sesh has carved a space for himself with films like Major and Goodachari, often backing mid-budget, content-driven cinema. However, he insists that his choices are not calculated. “I come out with the film once every two years. If I don’t do exactly what the heart says, then what is it all for? I don’t want it to be a brain investment. I want it to be a heart investment,” he explained.
In the end, Dacoit, which also stars Mrunal Thakur and Anurag Kashyap, may not have opened to unanimous critical acclaim, but it continues to build momentum with audiences. As Sesh makes clear, he is less concerned with hypothetical scenarios and more focused on the film’s journey. For him, the response so far reflects something more important than numbers—an honest connection with viewers that continues to grow. Despite this, Dacoit has managed a steady start, collecting Rs 22 crore net domestically over its opening weekend and Rs 40 crore worldwide, keeping it firmly in the conversation.
