Legendary music maestro Pandit Jasraj breathed his last in New Jersey on Monday. The classical singer and Padma Vibhushan died due to cardiac arrest. His mortal remains were brought in Mumbai today. Reportedly, his ‘Antim-darshan’ will be held tomorrow at his Versova residence post which he will be cremated in Vile Parle.

According to the media coordinator of the Jasraj’s family, the legendary music maestro will be cremated at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle tomorrow (August 20) with full state honours and a 21-gun salute.

Pandit Jasraj is survived by wife Madhura, son Shaarang Dev Pandit and daughter Durga Jasraj. Both Durga and Shaarang were seen greeting the media as their father’s body was brought at his Andheri residence.

Yesterday, Jasraj’s granddaughter Shweta Pandit had told Bombay Times, “Dadu’s body is being brought back from New Jersey and will reach Mumbai tomorrow. We need to get some permissions in place for safety during the pandemic. We spoke almost every week in the last six months during the pandemic, since this was the one time when we were all at home. When the pandemic struck, he was in his New Jersey home with his students and he had to stay put there.”

In a career spanning 80 years, Pandit Jasraj was bestowed with prestigious awards like Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. He even contributed to the compositions for film soundtracks which included ‘Vaada Tumse Hai Vaada’ for Vikram Bhatt’s movie ‘1920’ that released in 2008.
