After suffering a stroke in 2009, Piyush Mishra revealed that he began managing his addiction through spiritual practices, though he admits he hasn’t entirely quit drinking. Speaking openly about his long-standing battle with alcoholism, he described it as a deeply consuming phase that impacted both his personal and professional life. In a recent interview, he reflected on how addiction gradually takes hold, often without the individual fully realizing its severity.
Piyush Mishra Admits He Made Inappropriate, Obscene Phone Calls To Women
“At one point, you start feeling that drinking alcohol is necessary. Its effect is such that you want to drink more. Alcoholism is a deadly disease… there comes a time when, whether you want to or not, you need alcohol, your body craves it. I have felt this myself,” he shared in a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra.
Despite battling addiction, Piyush maintained that he never allowed alcohol to directly interfere with his work. He avoided drinking on set, though he acknowledges that his mindset during those years was heavily influenced by his addiction. His struggle, however, took a visible toll on his personal relationships, often leading to regret and emotional turmoil.
“After drinking, I did many things that later made me feel, ‘This is not me.’ I had issues with my mother, and I said many hurtful things to her while drunk… even after I realized I should forgive her. I made many inappropriate and obscene phone calls to women, and I wouldn’t even remember them the next morning… At that time, I was not in control of myself. I was doing things I didn’t want to do,” he recounted.
Piyush also spoke about how his addiction affected his professional reputation. Colleagues began to see him as difficult to work with, and he admitted that his reputation suffered. He often had to clarify that he had changed a process that had been both challenging and draining.
A turning point came in 2009 when he suffered a brain stroke, which forced him to take his condition more seriously. Since then, he has pursued spiritual practices like Vipassana to help manage his cravings. While he admits he hasn’t completely given up alcohol, he has achieved a significant level of control over his habits.
Piyush’s Recent Projects
Piyush Mishra’s latest work includes his role in the comedy film Rahu Ketu, released in January on Zee Studios, where he stars alongside Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma. Prior to that, he appeared in Crazxy (2025), a psychological thriller in which he lent his voice to a key character, and in Azaad (2025), which had a relatively lower profile. These projects demonstrate his ongoing presence in both mainstream and experimental cinema, balancing acting with his passions for theatre and music.
