Actor Manoj Kumar – who earned the nickname Bharat Kumar thank to his many patriotic films, is no more. The actor – born Harikrishan Giri Goswami, passed away on Friday, April 4 at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital at the age of 87. In the hours following his demise, several Bollywood stars such as Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Karan Johar and Ajay Devgn took to their social media handles to remember the actor-director. Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Akshay Kumar wrote, “Akshay Kumar shared via X, “I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love and pride for our country. And if we actors won’t take the lead in showing this emotion, who will? Such a fine person, and one of the biggest assets of our fraternity. RIP Manoj Sir. Om Shanti .”

Salman Khan also took to Twitter to pay tribute to the legend. He wrote, “Manoj Kumar Ji… a true legend. Thank you for the unforgettable films and memories…”

Filmmaker Karan Johar posted a heartfelt note on his Instagram Stories mourning Manoj Kumar. he wrote, “Today we lost a Hindi cinema Legend… Shri Manoj Kumar…… It took me back to a screening of Kranti I saw as a child… sitting excitedly on the floor with other kids and a packed screening room of filmmaker’s and actors and industry giants… this was the ROUGH CUT of the film… a 4 hour long version…. Manojji was sharing his film at such an early stage seeking feedback… seeking opinions for his ambitious motion picture ……the film went on to create history at the box office”.

Ajay Devgn & Other Bollywood Stars Mourn Manoj Kumar

Ajay Devgn also took to Twitter to mourn the passing of Manoj Kumar. He tweeed, “Manoj Kumar ji was not just a cinematic icon – he was a personal milestone in my family’s journey. He gave my father, Veeru Devgan, his very first break as an action director in Roti Kapda Aur Makaan. From there, their collaboration continued all the way to Kranti, creating moments that are now part of Indian cinema’s golden history.”

He continued, “Manoj ji’s films – Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, Shor, Kranti, they weren’t just films…they were national emotions. His creative genius, unwavering patriotism, and storytelling depth set a benchmark that very few have matched. As Indian cinema bids farewell to its Bharat Kumar – a storyteller, a patriot, and a legend. I also wish to say thank you for shaping my father’s journey and for inspiring countless storytellers like me. Your legacy, Manoj ji, is eternal. Om Shanti. – Ajay Devgn”

Madhur Bhandarkar also took to X to remember the legendary actor. Sharing some nostalgic photos from his meetings with Manoj Kumar, Madhur wrote, “I am saddened by the passing of the legendary actor & filmmaker, Manoj Kumar Sir, I had the privilege of interacting with him at many occasions , and he was truly an icon of Indian cinema. His storytelling & song picturizations in his films inspired national pride and will resonate for generations. My deepest condolences to his family members & admirers. #OmShanti”

Mouring Manoj Kuamr’s demise, actress Sonali Bendre wrote, “देशप्रेम = मनोजजी We lost a proud n passionate Indian today 🇮🇳 salute for all the iconic films sir..”

Politicians Remember The Late Actor-Director

Not just Bollywood stars, but several politician too took to social media to pay Manoj Kumar their last respects. PM Narendra Modi took to his Twitter handle and shares a couple of throwback pictures witht he late actor-director. Alongside them he tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”

President of India, Droupadi Murmu also tweeted in memory of the late Padma Shri awardee. She wrote, “Saddened by the demise of legendary actor and film-maker Manoj Kumar Ji. He has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. During his long and distinguished career he came to be known for his patriotic films which promoted a sense of pride in India’s contribution and values. The iconic characters of national heroes, farmers and soldiers he brought to life will remain etched in our collective memory. His cinema will instil national pride and inspire generations to come. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers.

Born in present-day Pakistan, Manoj Kumar breathed his last at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital at 4:03 am on Friday. His mortal remains will be kept at his Juhu residence and the cremation is expected to take place on Saturday.
