Saira Banu on being called AR Rahman's ex-wife

Oscar winning Music composer AR Rahman was recently hospitalised in Chennai after he suffered weakness due to dehydration. His son and spokesperson shared his health update confirm he is recuperating. Now AR Rahman’s wife Saira Banu has reacted to his hospitalisation and urged netizens to not address her as ex-wife. She even clarified that they are just separated and not divorced.

On Sunday, Saira shared a voice note to address the situation. In a statement, she said, “Asalam Alaikum, this is Saira Rahman here, I wish him a speedy recovery. I just got the news that he got chest pain and an angio was performed on him. With the blessings of the Almighty, he is doing fine now, and there’s nothing to be worried about.”

She added, “I also wanted to tell everyone that we are not officially divorced, we are still husband and wife. It’s just that we are separated because of my health issues. Since the last two years, I havent been doing well, and I didn’t want to stress him out. But please, I would request the media to not call me ‘ex-wife’ as we are only separated, but all my good wishes are still with him. I also want to tell everyone, especially his family that do not give him any kind of stress and to take care of him. Thank you,” read the statement.

For those unversed, AR Rahman and Saira Banu had announced their separation last year after 29 years of marriage. In a statement posted by Vandana, they had shared, “After many years of marriage, Saira and her husband, A.R. Rahman, have made the difficult decision to separate from each other. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship.” The couple married in 1995 and are parents to three children – Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.
